What fascinates me the most about Easter Island is that one would assume that the ancient inhabitants must have placed these massive statues all long the island's coast as defenses to fend/scare away enemies, avert natural calamities, or supernatural forces from the sea etc. But eerily all the statues actually face in towards the center of the island instead of facing out towards the sea.

#2 defenses, nope, as always Mr Attenborough gets down to the bottom of it!
basically it's all to do with them worshiping birds because of the freedom they have and their stuck on an island miles from anywhere, the Frigate bird especially.
there is an annual race to get the first egg of the season on a little island off shore, the clan sponsor of the guy who wins, goes into solitude for that year gains a sort of spiritual status and his clan rules for that year, when he dies he's buried and a statue goes up in his honor. pretty interesting stuff in the full doco.
