Yeah the Shay locomotives were generally used in areas where they did a lot of logging. The unusual wheel driving arrangement generated slow speeds but LOTS of torque for being able to move heavy loads in areas with lots of steep grades and the short trucks allowed for them to navigate very sharp corners, also a boon in logging country.

Great stuff,

There are loads of steam shows in the UK as well as steam trains you can ride. Much better when you can smell, feel and listen to these great machines.
