250kg WW2 Bomb found in Munich

A 250kg bomb with a chemical delayed trigger was found in the middle of munich. All attempts to defuse it failed, so it had to be detonated. 3000 civilians evacuated, 20 buildings damaged, 4 million euro estimated costs. Still 2500-3000 bombs are estimated to be underground.

How crazy it is to have a bomb detonated so many years after it was launched!

In a way like glimpsing the past. And a terrible one at that.

It's a good thing the bombs that are prepared for WW3 are equipped with 100% reliable detonators... good for our great grandchildren that is, not so good for us >:)

I still find WW2 ammunition in the ground here, digging a fishpool resulted into finding 24 unexplodes bullets, a grenade. and a 120 mm shell.

Even 60 years later(after the war) it is still not save to dig big holes. So we never punch concrete poles into the ground for building fundations before we use a metal detector or a scan. there could be heavy bombs left in the ground.

Wow, imagine those going off every few km's with hundreds of smaller bombs in between...what a nightmare the war must have been :(

I curse all cluster munitions and other dangerous remains. In this case, I'm glad that they found and detonated the bomb under 'safe conditions'. 3000 casualties 67 years later is just a tragic headline.

So the bomb had been there for quite a bit of years, doing nothing, and now they blew it up? Don't see how they could fail to defuse a bomb that old.

#11 Then read news reports about it (Google is your friend). It had a chemical delayed trigger. It was not supposed to blow up on impact. And the guy who wanted to defuse it (they flew him in since he is an expert on that) said that the trigger is way too unstable and he dont want to risk to blew himself off. Thats why they decided to make a controlled detonation.
I found no english wiki about the trigger..but here is a german description of it..just use any translation tool =) http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemisch-mechanischer_Langzeitz%C3%BCnder
(To make it short..its made of plastic plates wich holds back the detonator bold and a glass ampule of aceton..the acetone corrodes the plastic and depending on how much plastic the bomb will go off 2-144 hours after impact..plus many triggers had a secure funcrion, that when you try to remove the trigger mechanism it will instantly blow. It was designed to kill the firefighters, helpers or people that came out of the bunkers after the air attack..pretty mean design)
Would you give it a try to defuse a bomb "that old"? =)

Sucks if your nice house happens to be nearby. 20 buildings damaged is pretty bad.

Couldn't they have parked a few Marauders around it before ? Then again the costs would have been roughly the same :) If anyone missed it, this is the Marauder: http://www.snotr.com/video/7581/Top_Gear_-_The_Marauder

Imagine if there had been more unstable bombs in that area that were still undiscovered. That shock wave could have easily set them off as well...
