he should not have stopped, if he speed up instead he was able to pass.

#6 Heaven being UP is a misconception, it's usually found between the sheets

#5 sux2bu indeed. And sux2barrogant. He probably didn't see it right away. Helmets don't offer the best peripheral vision and he was doing about 60-70mph when the bike fell into the road. I'm surprised he was able to slow down as much as he did!

#9 mixed-up.... Well we will just have to disagree on this one.I raced AMA motocross for a number of years and have ridden street bikes for over a decade and I still think an alert rider would have had enough time to hit the binders hard and slide it to a stop. They were not going very fast and @ 0:07 he was already starting to decelerate as he must have just spotted the Honda coming into view. Bikes, especially race bikes, have much shorter braking distances than the car you drive.
This did not happen during a race , this was practice runs UP the mountain and then just cruising back down to collect everyone at the start. (you might notice they are going downhill in the video)
I still think swerving would have been smarter.

#10 not to argue but to continue the discussion...
yes, I did notice they were coming back down the road. (I am the OP of the video too.) I've actually been to the PPHIC 7 times since 1994. I also used to race hare scrambles and enduro's and grew up in a motorcycling family. My Dad, uncles, friends and I all have the scars, compressed vertebrae and numerous broken bones that are common to the community of AMA racers. (A good friend of my cousin is Nick Wey too; not that it's relevant, but I'm definitely familiar with riding/racing)
I also know from watching videos of races from friends Go Pro's that G-P's have a very wide field of view and we see things differently in G-P footage than in real life. I give Jeff Grace a little more credit.

#11 Yea in an interview with Jeff he said the GP has a much wider view than he did with his helmet on,but I was basing my opinion on when he first seemed to see the Honda and let off of the gas.
And yea , the scars and breaks and operations do take their toll on the body ;three cervical disc operations, three knee operations, and a fractured shoulder ,but a lot of great memories too!
We could probably have a good time telling race stories over a few beers.

#5 I think it's lovely that you get to second guess the rider from the comfort of your computer chair. However the width of Jeff Grace's field of view is irrelevant. Who could have guessed that the falling motorcycle would bounce then do a second weird twirl bounce and land all the way on the right side of the roadway? Until the falling motorcycle stopped the best course of action was to slow down and guide right but not so far right to go off the road. By the time it stopped it was too late to change his course of action.

What if he would have been thrown down the cliff ?
