I've heard about this phenomenon long time ago but I still don't understand how that happens, unlike this boy, there are cases where a person in a coma wakes up speaking fluently a language they have never been exposed to, and not being able to speak or understand their native tongue at all, this boy has a mild case compared to some of the other similar cases.

#2 Never happened. No one has ever woken from a coma speaking a language he or she had never been exposed to before. It's conceivable that such a person might have completely forgotten the exposure (we're talking about serious brain damage here), but it's hardly unlikely that prevarication to generate interest is the explanation.

#4 The brain has default preferred standards for everything from preferred language to preferred ice cream flavor to preferred cursed word to describe a terrible driver.

If rationalizing about it can change those standards over time, I don't see why brain injury can't.

PS. Obviously, exposure is required. There is no such thing as learning a completely new language by hitting your head on wall. :(|)

He might haven't been as fluent in Mandarin before the coma, but obviously he already knew a lot. While sleeping, the brain does a lot of optimization, so I guess a week of coma was well enough to get the language sorted out in his mind.
