The vast majority of motions the body can perform (i.e., exercise) are rotary in nature; for joints, there is no up or down, only around. Thus, if the choice is available, choose free weight resistance over machines to save your joints from probable deterioration. Furthermore, this rotary nature implies that performance could be measured as a curve (i.e., strength curve), so use cables and bands wisely. Also, motions like the ones depicted in this video (hip abduction and adduction outside of the gait cycle AND while in passive hip flexion?!) are rarely if at all performed outside of, say, a reverse-anorexic’s posing routine. Just say no to the isolation of synergistic stabilizer-neutralizer muscles!
