Diesel can run under water and it doesn't matter if the exhaust is under as long as the driver keeps pushing on the gas until the water level got high enough that the truck started to float probably causing the tires to spin which would make the driver let of the accelerator and then flood the exhaust.

That's a great fix. Buddies of mine had to do this to a Jeep tj on the trails. Blew a rear u-joint. They chained a log to the left axle (like a ski) and drove the jeep out of the trail in front wheel drive.
