Amazing results, but as usual, the media are writing provocative, misleading and mostly plain-wrong titles. This video clearly states that this HIV virus is modified (should it even be called that) and it basically does something quite different than the original. When this first got out, some news companies even talked about curing cancer with aids. Even writing "curing cancer with HIV" is mostly written to attract attention.

#2 yep, but it's more complicated than that. It has to be fine-tuned to your cancer cells and you're basically programming RNA (it can go wrong). And I suppose it only works on leukemia, because HIV by itself is targeting white blood cells - you just make it more picky to only target the wrong ones.

You make it sound like it was a bad thing to attract attention to certain matters. In this case, it is all but negative. You blame the media. But who is buying it? We are, the consumers. If we keep telling the media that this is the headlines we want for you to get our attention, who are we really to blame? You should be curious, and instigating when you read headlines like these, not assume and make opinions based on the headline. And in this particular case, how is it NOT a HIV virus? Yes, it is modified, but it is still HIV. A Mondeo and a Thunderbird are both Ford cars. I don't see why you would be upset over the media in this particular incident, there are far worse examples that could have been addressed and made a point out of, this was the wrong one. Be happy, be astounded that someone thought of doing something like this, how crazy the headline might seem here, it is accurate, and its amazing.

But the average "consumer" is a layman. You tell her "HIV virus" she will think of the HIV virus.
It's lucky she even knows what it is. She does not about the thousand other viruses - why? Because the media keeps talking about it and AIDS in the same sentence.

Don't expect more from her. And the media does know that most people only know so much about it so yes it *is* a deliberate hype and they utilize the fact that it is technically still a HIV virus to valdiate a sentence like "curing cancer with HIV"; when they could easily put the word "modified" in front of HIV.

- The first suggests some huge sensation noone has ever thougth of
- The second suggests even more fiddling with genese etc that so many people are afraid of.
