If you actually saw this programme, David Attenborough says that in the confusion, this Bison runs into the calf. "A stroke of luck for the wolves".

This is after a long stand off, where the calf manages to get away at one point and the heard surround it to protect it.

that's ok sacrificed one of them but at least if the Bison killed 2 or 3 wolves in his way ..that also can serve as a lesson " no free meal with bison " wolves will think twice before attacking them again, but this way they might be attempted to try it again as meal and help to serve the meal is offered for free!
