+10 11. dvandok commented 9 years ago on video The Lie We Live

This may be an unpopular opinion but I take exception to almost everything said in this video. Sure, there are plenty of problems in this world (largely due to the pressure of population growth) but the way to address the is never mentioned in the video. To lay blame on the corporate leadership sidesteps the fact that they are people too, born into the same system. There are plenty of grassroots movements that aim to change society through law reform, but they need your support to carry enough weight to do it. Mainstream media never gives them any attention, not because of some evil conspiracy but precisely because they have no impact until they grow bigger.

Human society has indeed become very complex, but without these advanced structures it would not have grown so large. There is far less conflict than a century ago, fewer deaths due to diseases; we have a longer live span and far more opportunities than our ancestors. Our access to general knowledge has taken leaps and bounds in the last decades, which will undoubtedly bear fruit in the next generations. The screens we watch put us in touch with others in real-time, even if we sacrifice some of the here-and-now.

Being critical of our 'mindless drone' attitude needs some historic reflection. The Roman empire received similar critique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_circuses). Even if it's true, we cannot expect change to come simply from the realization that change is needed. What this inspirational video lacks is the direction we should take instead of what we are doing now.

I never realised how special this would be to foreigners. Basically all kids go to school by bike, unless you live closer than a 5 minute walk or further than about 50 minutes by bike (which amounts to about 15km). Because The Netherlands has excellent bike roads (separate from the cars and pedestrians) and it's mostly flat as a pancake (no climbing required!) it just makes sense. Bikes are cheap and take little parking space. Picture the size of the parking lot if all these kids had arrived by car (not to mention the traffic jam).

+5 29. dvandok commented 9 years ago on video DNA taken from trash used to map features of litterbugs in Hong Kong

#2, #3, you're right. Although the human genome is being thoroughly mapped, and genes can be linked to traits such as (perhaps) a slightly bigger nose or higher forehead, we are far away from the technology that is boasted in the video. They do admit, in the end, that this is just a mock-up with faces from volunteers. Who, undoubtedly, had their faces modeled from a montage of video images.

I'm more concerned with the message they try to send. Is it that no matter who you are and what you do, Big Brother is watching you? Not so much about public shaming as it is about public scaring. The message may well be that if we don't watch our government, we may end up in a system where everybody's DNA is on file and they *can* trace minor offenses like these to your person. Even non-offenses, as cigarette butts can be obtained from ashtrays as well.

+4 34. dvandok commented 10 years ago on video Internet Citizens: Defend Net Neutrality - CGP Grey

#1 you're missing the point. We already pay for use, because of the limit on my subscription. Some people (e.g. here in the Netherlands) are on 50 MB/s, others at 100 MB/s, and I am on 8 MB/s (which is fine for me). ISPs charge based on these limits.

Without net neutrality ISPs would be allowed to squeeze IP TV, telephony, video services etc. if they view this as competition of their own offerings. Basically allowing them to monopolize their hold of the data line. All for the purpose of MAKING MORE MONEY. Unless you are an ISP, this isn't good news.

Just to make one thing very clear: internet telephony is so low-bandwith, there is no technical reason whatsoever to squeeze it. Just a business/financial reason.

+3 45. dvandok commented 10 years ago on video Mass Incarceration in the US

The penal system in the USA is a grave, grave blight on the principles of freedom, equality and fairness. Not only is the number of people put in prisons way too high, it's also more often than not the wrong people (r.i.p. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_Carter). The number of black and hispanic people in jail is disproportionately high compared to the overall population. Don't read this as though most crimes are committed by non-whites, but rather as a sign that racism runs rampant through society.

And the worst criminals go scot-free because their crimes are never brought to court: leaders of big corporations who pocket huge bonuses because they saved their companies tons of money with ruthless disregard of responsibility to the people or the environment (tons of examples, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Canal); government officials who purposely look the other way are just as bad. One can only guess how many lives this destroyed.

I am not saying it's ok to turn to crime, but if people weren't so damn poor there would be a lot less of it.

+3 51. dvandok commented 9 years ago on video Don't Stay in School

This video wins the award for most misplaced outrage. By the sound of it he had a pretty decent curriculum, which is more than can be said for the average school kid even in the more well-off countries. Educational reform is necessary especially in the USA but mostly because the amount of dollars flowing into the public school system has been systematically dropping, and the overall quality is under serious pressure.

The most important lessons of life are not learned in school; family (especially parents) has a role to play in preparing you for life. School is there to prepare you for your future study and/or job; a typical job interview seldom includes the question whether you are capable of filling in a tax return sheet.

I can't recite the full text of basic human rights but I know why they were established, and I'm sure the right to go to school is one of them. ;-)

#6 The change will have to come from within the country itself. The situation is not so different from Europe mid 19th century, when factory laborers suffered under the same conditions. Unionization and, ultimately, law reform, meant better conditions for the populace. This did not go without a fight.

As westerners we should keep an eye out for BIG MONEY companies trying to influence low-wage countries (by basically threatening to take their business and capital elsewhere) into postponing law reform and cracking down on labor unions. It's ok to buy affordable clothing as long as you can see that the money went to companies that care at least as much about their workers as about their profit margins. We should all demand such transparency.

Another example of a stupid set of regulations that force manufacturers to implement stupid mechanisms in their tools.

It's just as stupid as if they were trying to implement a ban on 3D printed hand guns in the US. Sure, you could try to make 3D printers that recognise when somebody tries to print (parts of) a gun, but nobody is really interested in doing that when there are so many better options available.

There's some pretty good counterfeit currency around these days, especially 50 euro notes, and they don't come out of a Xerox machine. Not even my dear old mother would be fooled by laser printed money.

+1 67. dvandok commented 10 years ago on video Humans Need Not Apply

Nice going, getting everybody all worked up about the future like that. But there's a couple of things that need mentioning.

First of all, while all of these technologies are already here, there is a gulf between the proof of principle and deployment on scale. For instance, Grid Computing started around the early 2000s and only now is picking up pace (renamed Cloud Computing).

Secondly, the transitions are going to be far smoother than shown here. The truck that collects the garbage in our street used to have three guys 5 years ago. Now it's one guy and a 'robot arm' to pick up the bins. The self-driving fully automated version is at least 10 years away.

Thirdly, there's the economy. The price of energy will pick up and become a more significant element in the overall picture. Running a data centre for just a couple of these mechanical brains costs in the order of 400 kW. Also, we're not building robots to amuse, feed or breed robots. At the end of the chain there is always the human consumer that sets the price. If he can't afford it because he's out of a job, the market crumbles.

Lastly, I'm not going to buy mechanical music. I doubt that any machine will match up to Pink Floyd any time soon. ;-)

There are good points made in this video, and some good examples, but I refuse to lie down and be called the 'new horse', dammit! When was the last time horses had the right to vote, hm?

The takeaway message is that the American people can probably afford to set (or raise) minimum wages. It's just going to raise prices on the order of 1%–2% for most consumer products. I'm always distracted when I'm confronted with silly writing errors. And I'm a bit angered that the author put the burden of communication on me, the receiver, instead op putting in a bit more effort themselves to avoid these mental speed bumps. After all, written communication is 1-to-many, so the total effort of communication is the sum of one author and the entire readership. I think every drop of sweat on the part of the author is manifold redeemed when so many people enjoy the read.

I feel the same way about typography. While I agree entirely with Mr. Fry, I think the visuals that went with his speech contribute nothing; they merely distract. It's all effect and no substance.

Isn't this the type of engine in a typical American car?

I think this instrument is a nice experiment, but to me it sounds too much like a harpsichord. Good for baroque music, but it lacks expression and dynamics.

Has this guy never heard of clock_gettime()? It's a POSIX standard. For all but historic times it saves a ton of hassle. Code reuse to the rescue!

This is absolutely the worst rendition of the Final Countdown I've ever heard. I love that song so much, I cannot stand to listen to this.

Sorry for the negativity, but some songs are not meant for marching bands.

What people seem to forget is what the effect will be of having what is essentially a piece of the sun right here on earth. I'm not worried about ITER, which is only a prototype with a rather low output of 500 MW, but I am worried about scaling it up to 'solve the energy crisis'. All the energy we 'consume' is not consumed, as the law of conservation of energy tells us, but converted into heat. That heat ends up in the atmosphere. In the long run this might be worse than the greenhouse effect that is currently messing up our climate.

On the other hand, maybe it will prevent the next ice age. ;-)

#4. No, there are also electric chainsaws (although not as powerful). OK, this thing came from 1967. The entire two stroke concept has been plaguing us for years because there's no economic incentive to improve on it. Even today they sell these infernal, noisy, polluting machines on all kinds of devices, from bikes to leaf blowers to lawn mowers. Can't stand them. Sorry.
