This got nothing to do with the fact that it is an Xbox DVD drive. The same thing will happen with almost any optical drive spinnig fast enough.
Now, because I'm not a physicist I cannot give you a definite answer as to why this thing happens but I think it has got something to do with the Newton's Laws of Motion (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong if you know better).
Even though if I'm wrong with the Newton law thing you can easily test this in real life.
Take, for example, one 52x cd drive and attach it to a PC. Then copy something from the CD to the computer's hard drive. Turn the drive while the CD spins at full speed. Congratulations. You got a scratched CD. You can further test this with a front wheel of you bike or with something similar. Take the wheel it and hold it with both hands from the center axel and spin the wheel. Try to turn the wheel. You can actually feel the wheel to resist your attempts to turn the wheel while it spins (whoa it almost rhymes ).
