Actually it's much better than most of the videos made with phones and handheld cameras. You know, the ones that shake all the time, and when something awesome happens, just point at the floor until it's all over?

Germany was seriously fragmented for most of the history - during WW1/WW2 they must have been overcompensating for their past.

I know it's insensitive given the casualties. But I'm sick of these vertical videos. Because of the phones, we will eventually have to mount our screens and TV's sideways to watch most of the clips.

16. orion 76 days ago on video Computer program reveals invisible motion in video
I'm very skeptical... are they using raw video from very good cameras? Because if you take a compressed video stream or a bad camera with a lot of noise, the flicker and artifacts would overpower the microscopic sub-pixel motion.

23. orion 93 days ago on video 60,000 bottle caps later...One awesome wall.
#6 your eyes deceive you. A quick division of height by cap diameter, or a quick glance at the end of the video tells you it's about 100 caps high. So a single "square" with the height of the room contains ~10000 caps. As the wall is much wider than tall, it comes to several times that. It could easily be more than 60k.

26. orion 99 days ago on video The voyager satellite witnesses the death of a star
Scientifically completely wrong. At such scales, things take millions to cool down - sun can't suddenly go black, where would all the heat go? And pieces can't just slowly blow off, gravity is still there, and when the star dies, the inner parts collapse, and the outer parts do get blown away by the pressure of the light inside, but that is a violent explosion, not crumbling of ashes just like some common Voldemort.

52. orion 249 days ago on video 10 Useless Human Body Parts
Actually, the body hair is useful. It does provide some thermal insulation and prevents chafing. The appendix holds a reserve of digestive bacteria that repopulate the intestine after bowel problems. And male nipples are unavoidable, because male-specific genetic material is very small and can only enforce minor body changes, not a complete redesign.
53. orion 251 days ago on video Guy shows the way to a cat

#4 I like it as an art form but can you enjoy it in person without casting shadows?
Its variant of building projection is less problematic in this way.
73. orion 278 days ago on video Curious Displays

#9 and #10 this phenomenon has been known for a very long time. There is no need for this in transportation, maglev trains already get rid of the friction problem with simpler technology.
Anyway, as you can see, you can adjust this by hand, you must only overcome the force needed to move and create the defects in the superconductor. Also, you would need additional repulsion to work against the slow downward drift.

I think the water should be warm to make this work properly. There must be a wood burning stove somewhere out of frame.
236. orion 2 years ago on video What Happens When You Drop a Slinky
Like #1 and #2 said, this is a misleading and childish explanation.
While the spring above the bottom is stretched, it is properly "hanging" on the higher parts of the slinky, its environment is exactly the same as before the top is released. The same holds if there is a tennis ball there. At the moment of release, the forces are unbalanced only for the topmost part. The disturbance then propagates downwards like waves.
If you observe the center of mass, it falls just like any other object. Only the shape of the object changes in a way that some parts remain stationary for a while. Kinda like a falling cat, only the cat's motion is much more complicated.

250. orion 2 years ago on video Wireless data from every light bulb
#6 if you bring internet to every lightbulb, this is much more complicated than just plugging it into the computer (and modulating the entire power supply is just dangerous and unreliable). And you must still be careful not to cover the receiver with your hand or something. I'm just saying this idea is putting unnecessary additional stage of transmission and brings nothing new.
251. orion 2 years ago on video Wireless data from every light bulb
There's a reason why this never caught on (there were similar technologies for wireless routers out there for years). You need a line-of-sight. Or at least good white or reflective surfaces around. Every time your roommate passes by or you shift your head, the connection drops. It's basically no different than having an optic cable running from your lightbulb to your computer.
And you still have only one channel per LED, no matter how wide the spectrum is.
This idea is severely limited and in most cases it has no advantage over wired network.

The successive animation frames are encoded as parallel stripes and moving thin window over the picture selects one of them. It's simple trick - let's say animation has 20 frames: strips 0,20,40,60,.. make up first frame, strips 1,21,41,... second and so on.

#10 what ads? It's funny, this is first time in months that I thought about ads at all - after you reminded me. I have adblock and haven't seen any significant ads since (and it even loads faster). There are occasional banners left but that's all.
Adblock is one firefox addon everybody should have. Who knows, if everybody had it, people might realize nobody cares about ads and stopped putting them on their pages.
410. orion 4 years ago on video Paperclips
#5: suprisingly, many people talk about about magnetic "energy", about "flowing". There's magnetic field, but no energy is lost and there's no "flow" unless there's something interfering with it. Technically, those paperclips are increasing resistance in electromagnets, but the effect is so small it's undetectable.
Also, people mix up mystical energies, EM field and EM waves. Static magnetic field is something totally different from cell phone waves and those are again much different from CRT monitor radiation, gamma rays, etc. With just a little education we could stop the conspiracy theories and panic about electrical appliances.

Absolutely true. And sad.
My old printer printed the page immediately when I clicked it. My new printer (supposedly some 20 pages per minute) is putting out lightshow display, breakdances for a minute with its cartridge, musically playing with himself and then finally starts printing the page after 2 minutes. And after it's done, it needs the same time to "recover". And the printers at work do the same thing. It also wouldn't turn off with on/off button and fools around for 2m55s every time the power comes back. I don't get it how newer technology needs all that crap when old printers just do what they're supposed to.

442. orion 4 years ago on video More 'bathtub' scenes
It's shot with tilt-shift lens which produces very narrow depth of field. This simulates optical behaviour of small objects close to the camera. You must also match playback speed so that behaviour of fluids matches those of "bathtub" circumstances. You can calculate this by matching Reynolds numbers of both flows. Before CGI this method was used to film marine battles with miniatures.

#(removed comment): Yes, it's usually a kind of oil with ferromagnetic metal dust. The particles must be very fine, otherwise they don't stay homogenised and separate from the fluid.
454. orion 4 years ago on video Impossible?
Obvious trick. Every next dress is longer and with more cleavage. It's multilayer dress, you just pull it down and the skirt folds out from the top part. Next skirt must cover the previous one, so it must be longer. You can see violet skirt rolling down at 0:55. First two dresses are however just peeled away.
Still, well performed.
