He's not brake checking, it's a "crash for cash" scam - and the with the camera is not at fault because he managed to stop in time.

55. Gorf commented 10 years ago on video Forced perspective with a moving camera
#1 When you are viewing a 2D image, your perspective is dictated by the camera and the way your brain interprets what it's seeing. Today's classic video, http://www.snotr.com/video/2417/The_Crevasse_-_Making_of_3D_Street_Art shows a 2D image which only works if viewed from one point.
If you see a person who looks much smaller than the one next to them, your brain assumes that because people are more or less the same height, the "smaller" person is further away. If you add a point of reference, such as lines that "suggest" a room shape, or similarly designed mugs that are different sizes, you suddenly have a point of reference, and assume the person holding the big cup is not actually further away, but physically smaller.
This "forced perspective" is spoiled when something tells your brain that something is wrong, for example of the two people look at each other instead of at the space where your brain thinks they are. Sometimes it can be spoiled if they move, but it's most definitely spoiled if the camera moves. This video shows how moving the actors and props is a clever way to avoid spoiling the shot when you move the camera.
It's how you know the interviewees in this LG promotional video are actors
http://www.snotr.com/video/11769/LG_End_of_the_World_Prank
They would have registered when they walked in the room that they are not facing a window, but a 2D picture. Even if they weren't paying attention, they would have realised it's a TV when they stood up and their viewpoint changed, but the TV didn't.

#4 have you ever looked at the statistics for age vs road death/serious injury? Here in the UK the most reliable sources don't differentiate whether casualties were inside the car or outside, but the bulk of injuries are caused by the youngest drivers. Even adjusting for the fact that there are fewer older drivers actually on the road, you still end up with a massive age bias towards crashes- and it's not the old ones doing the crashing.
I get stuck behind them when they are going slow, or getting lost, or when they change their mind halfway through a manoeuvre, or being overcautious at a junction - and I get mad at them. Within a mile I'm usually mad at myself, instead, for being so unreasonable.

I don't see the problem here. They've printed their own lower receiver and mag to prove that it can be done. This means that firearms regulations (and probably others) aren't going to work because components can be acquired without record. In the mind of a politician this means 3D printers need to be regulated too because they can print restricted items.
They are just proving a point. Here in the UK private ownership of most firearms has been banned by regulation, and it's only affected recreational shooters. The loonies who shoot up schools and the criminals and gangs can still get hold of them for less than the cost (and less hassle) than a realistic BB gun.

I've never ridden a bike in my life, but even I know that bikers stay off the paint whenever possible, because there's less grip than on the tarmac. (Especially in the UK, where it's usually raining.)

#9 The checked pattern is intended to introduce more fake parallax into the scene. If the cube were real, the squares furthest from your eyes would appear smaller than those closest to your eye. The way this effect works is:
a) the cube isn't really a cube, as you can see when it's shown from the side,
b) the squares that meet at the three-faced vertex are bigger than those on the two-faced vertexes which in turn are bigger than those on the one-faced corners. Even though these one-face corners (the vertexes where only one face of the "cube" is visible) are closer to your eye, the fact that the checks are smaller means your brain translates that to them as being further away.
Parallax is the apparent difference between near and distant objects when viewed from a different location. It's the fundamental way depth perception works - your eyes are a few inches apart and see different views. Distant objects are pretty much the same to both eyes. Near objects look very different.
I'd be interested to see if this effect is as realistic when viewed in true 3D - i.e. by a person sitting in front of the construction, not a camera...

#4 It's hard to say with any certainty. The titles imply that these are all three-hour samples compressed into clips, but the clips are not of equal duration. The ones with jump cuts get gradually longer (I didn't use the ones that fade), between 11 and 23½ seconds, implying a speed-up of 980X dropping to 460X.
There is an airborne plane that covers the distance from just past Fairoaks (south west-ish of Heathrow) to Gatwick 34Km in 3½ frames - which would equate to an apparent speed of 875000 Km/h. Assuming an actual cruise speed of 500 knots, or 926 Km/h, it suggests it has been sped up by 944X so your estimate of 1sec=20mins isn't far out - it's nearer to 15mins.
#5 I can see how you get the name "Detective"...

156. Gorf commented 9 years ago on video Single celled Slime Mold solves maze search problem with no brain
Engineers didn't build transit systems, they evolved. In most parts of the world, major settlements pre-date motorised transport. To get from one settlement to another, you would follow the path of least resistance. As time progresses, and more people use the route, it will get "embedded" and in time become a road. The Romans formalised this process and made straight roads, which make the travelling time the shortest it can be, but they still have to circuit any major obstacles such as mountains, water or dense forest, and perhaps divert if it made sense (such as another settlement close to the intended route.
So, like people, slime mould is just plain lazy.

I do have a lot of sympathy with drivers in conditions such as these. There is a lot of negativity when people comment on here and other video sites, but let's face it, driving is a skill which improves with experience. If these drivers haven't experienced conditions like these, they may not know how best to deal with them.
When I first encountered a very slippy hillside, about 15 years ago, I slowly twirled the car through 180 degrees. It didn't make me a really bad driver, just really inexperienced. Now I have the experience and the confidence to stay off the brake, if I lost control of the car today, THAT would make me a bad driver.
(Not that I'm particularly good.)

#2 thanks for the link, but this video isn't really tilt shift - they just blur a band at the top and bottom of the screen in their video editor. It's very hard to fake tilt shift convincingly because structures that are orthogonal to the lens (such as vertical poles, building faces etc) should be in constant focus along their height. For example the crane at 0:13 and the building at 0:20 and the gantry at 0:49 should all have consistent focus (whether that's in focus or out of focus).

#10 is absolutely right - #6 you won't get a car door open even with manual unlocks if much of the door is below water.
You need to break a window, preferably one that is not under water, then just wait for the car to fill with water to the same level as outside. It takes courage - especially if the car is completely under water. It still takes more effort than usual to open the door, but fighting against water outside when there's none inside is impossible.

#10 The differential in proper off-road cars can be locked.
Stuntmen doing it in ordinary road cars can achieve the effect by welding up the differential, but no welding is needed in 4x4s. There may be as many as three diffs, one for the drivetrain and one for each of the axles. You need to lock any that are providing power to wheels on the ground.
That has the side-effect (undesirable, for this stunt) that at least one of the wheels off the road is spinning. This driver needed to drive with the front locked, centre and rear unlocked, until the rear wheel was off. Then with the front and centre unlocked, and rear locked, while the front wheel was coming off. While changing locks from front to rear, he would have needed to engage then disengage the centre lock. All this while driving a car balanced on two wheels, which impressive by itself, becomes more impressive when you remember there are people and wheels moving about on one side, shifting its centre of gravity.

#4 Zevv you forgot to take into account terminal velocity. I've made a big assumption that the rock's TV is 150mph (based on a skydiver's TV being about 120mph).
Anyway, it would reach that after 7 secs or so, so it is no longer accelerating.
Accounting for the time taken for the sound to come back up the hole, you're looking at a depth of just over 500 metres.
Of course, there are other factors as well as the guessed TV. It assumes the air density is constant (it won't be), so the speed of the sound from it hitting the bottom and the drag on the rock will change depending on where they are in the shaft. Also, you can hear it hitting the wall a couple of times on the way down. If these are ledges like on the graphics intro to the IT crowd, they will have a big effect.

187. Gorf commented 11 years ago on video Amazing Water & Sound Experiment #2
#3 it does look different in real life, but that's because our eyes and brain process information at a different frequency (about 10Hz) and are quite adept at introducing their own illusions like motion blur.
If you took a photo of the water using a fast shutter, it would look like a sine wave, because that's what wiggling a hose would do. You'd get the same effect, but visible to your naked eye, by holding the hose in your hand and wobbling it back and forth.
The 23 Hz and 25 Hz frequencies produce a slightly different wobble which is not in the same place when the 24 Hz camera photographs each frame. Because of this, the wave form being produced by the audio and water appears to "move".
Interestingly enough, if you play a 48 Hz wave you'll still get a static display but with the wave peaks being much closer together. If you play a 36 Hz wave, (in theory) you'll get something halfway between, but with the flickering effect of two waves criss-crossing.

Roundabouts are also more fuel efficient. At low speed, the bulk of fuel is used in accelerating a vehicle. Cars are obliged to stop at the four-way, whereas if there's nothing approaching already on the roundabout there's no need to stop.
Roundabouts only work when used properly. I live on the corner of a UK roundabout, and it pains me the number of people approaching to my right who stop to let me onto the junction, unnecessarily holding up traffic behind them because they think they are being "nice".

#7 Not quite 1/5 as it's not necessarily the same rotor blade at each position from one frame to the next. The rotor is turning through an exact multiple of 72 degrees with each frame.
So to be completely geeky: The camera FPS only needs to be x/y of the rotor RPM, where x and y are integers and y is a multiple of 5.

201. Gorf commented 14 years ago on video Bizarre Effect
The rolling shutter effect is the result of the cheaper CMOS sensors used in mobile phones and consumer level HD cameras. It's also the cause of jello/jelly lens, where the subject is relatively static but the camera itself is moving a lot. Where the camera pans up, the footage appears squashed, where it pans down, it appears stretched, and where it pans right or left, it tilts in the direction of the pan. All video cameras suffer from the effect described by #17. This effect is particular to those cameras where the top of the video frame was not captured at the exact same instant as the bottom, which is what happens with older (and in my opinion, better) CCD sensor cameras.

You don't necessarily pay google to increase your page status.
Anyone with a solid understanding of what that guy was saying can charge to create page links and web pages that spoof links to and from your page to increase "visibility".
And as Google finds ways to block fake positives from such sites, the site creators find ways to avoid the blocking algorithms.
That said - nothing is more effective at getting your page to the top of the list than changing it often. The more the spider has to crawl your page to check for updates, the better its rank. The spider only checks periodically, and schedules a sooner crawl if the page has changed since its last crawl, or a later crawl if there have been no changes.

242. Gorf commented 11 years ago on video What happens when you put a camera on a helicopter rotor
It's only partly to do with shutter speed.
Modern CMOS cameras which make high-resolution video affordable have a usually undesirable effect called "rolling shutter". Every frame is made up of 1080 separate moments in time, instead of the exact same instant every 1/25th or 1/30th (or whatever) of a second.
The first time the image appears to have settled back to its original state is when the rotor is at 1080rpm (or whatever the vertical resolution of the camera is. At 30rpm the image is from 12 different points in the rotor's spin - all cycling every 12 lines of the frame.
To further complicate visualising what's happening, the camera is recording in portrait mode - presumably so it can be more easily balanced when secured to the rotors.

You can't blame the media, because they are only interested in selling stuff. If women (collectively) were honest enough with themselves to buy a product advertised by a fuller-figured woman, the market for anorexic models would disappear.
It's a perpetual cycle which has gone on for long enough, now, that people feel comfortable with the idea of blaming the advertiser when all the advertiser is doing is trying to appeal to the masses.

248. Gorf commented 10 years ago on video Firearm myths about knock-down power
#3 is right. If you put the impact point further from the ground (as it would be with a person) you need less energy to knock it over. The 50 pound vs 150 pound argument is invalid, too. The 150 pound human is "articulated" with a good amount of that weight beyond the pivot points of those articulations. Trying to move 50 pounds at centre mass at least a metre from the ground is about right.
A human would only get knocked over with body armour anyway. Anything with enough punch to displace 50 pounds from its centre of gravity is going to punch through a mass of flesh and bone.

I love how there are so many discussions on how inaccurate this would be because of gravitational interference, yet nobody has mentioned that by turning the camera 90 degrees to the right, he could have had the shadow on the video matching the shadow on the planets.
It's probably also worth mentioning that the reference point matters. If the distances are being measured centre to centre (which is likely), Jupiter is 20% bigger than if the distances are being measured surface to surface. If the latter, we wouldn't be inside the sun, but it would still be quite warm.

#2 this gun is intended to save lives, not take them. (Or at least, that's why it was being prototyped.)
With missiles that are capable of speeds several times that of sound, simple projectile-based defence systems are lacking. It's possible for the missile to fly between the bullets that are being spat out at a rate of 75 per second. For example, there's 12 metres between each bullet fired by an upgraded CIWS, which is the missile defence system on American warships.
Assuming the same muzzle velocity, this thing would be putting out bullets that are 5½cm apart (a couple of inches).
