+9 1. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video 25 Things That Visitors Will Find Most Surprising About The United States

As much as these are mostly true, all of the mentioned facts have a pretty wide range across the country as well, so take them with a grain of salt and don't expect them to be 100% accurate with every American you meet or everywhere you show up. The diversity of the individuals, communities, landscape and influences makes generalizing like this virtually impossible.

Southern California is almost like a different nation compared to Vermont or Wisconsin. Dallas or Houston are nothing like Austin even though they are in the same state, much like Seattle, Washington is nothin like Washington D.C.
Meanwhile, many small local places only accept cash, no credit cards. In some areas kids never really move out, just move into a different room, floor or trailer on the same property etc.

So remember that this list is written from an average middle-class person's bubble. The country is in constant change everywhere. The bigness of everything is probably the most reliable constant fact. But in the end, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Bill O'Reilly, Bill Burr, the newborn child of an illegal immigrant parent inside U.S. borders - they all are just as American as a redneck farm boy who thinks Europe is a country.

And please for the love of Hitchens appreciate the friendliness instead of calling it fake and being annoyed by it. It's just the good people trying to balance out for the seemingly infinite amount of assholes everywhere else in order to make life just a little bit more pleasant and enjoyable.

Seriously though, NASCAR is so fucking stupid... even I as a first degree 'Murica fanboy cannot stand up for it. It's the Meth of motor racing: High risk, low reward and a lot of white trash. WRC and Rally Cross are more like Acid or Ecstasy, where at least the risk is proportional to the reward of the experience you get out of it.

Agree with #4 in general - BUT people regularly see multiple deaths happen in those Russian dashcam compilations and nobody has a problem with those being posted here, because we don't see bodies getting crushed out in the open. So we do have a little bit of a double standard here.

Imagine being a tourist flying in from the other side of the planet to visit Uppsala, Sweden (which btw. hilariously translates to "Whoops!, Sweden" in German) and just having watched some kind of zombie apocalypse flick while in the air. You arrive at the hotel at, let's say, 8:30pm. You then get something to eat and by 9:45pm decide to go for a walk back to the hotel - only to encounter this. I would probably shit myself.

It's amazing how many people here are still unfamiliar with the concept of a joke. Simply hop on the "stupid 'muricans and their attorneys" bandwagon and feel like a hero.

And despite the fact that the coupon is obviously not meant for your own sandwiches and the guy is clearly being a douche on purpose for comic effect, he is completely right legally speaking (unless the small print says something else) - for good reason as #5 has already pointed out. If common sense was the law, slavery and denying service to certain races would still be legal. In fact we still see aftereffects of that kind of common sense in the South - because slavery, racism and segregation was so common until those damn constitutional lawyers and human/civil rights activists started causing trouble.
Common sense is absolutely not the best thing since sliced bread. In fact, in it's worst forms, it can undo much more progress than has been accomplished because of it. That's why we have a legal system that ideally balances the playing field between the small individuals and big institutions.
Without that, you basically get Russia: majority opinion = common sense = the law, unless a big government-friendly business disagrees

+1 6. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Astroturf

Being critical of the over-medication culture and for-profit corruption of the business side of private healthcare in the U.S. is one thing. Being critical of vaccinations in general, because there is a microscopically higher autism rate among vaccinated kids is on a whole different level. This is the macro version of the housewife being worried about cellphone radiation while the kids are just one poorly shut door or gate away from drowning in the pool on your watch. Yes, there is a risk. Nothing comes without any risk whatsoever. That's called life. There are no free lunches in nature. The key is trading risks with a positive outcome. Cleanliness and higher standards of living brought us more allergies and cancer rates. But that's okay, because we also get to live much better lives in the big picture and we are getting close to curing cancer and allergies can be avoided by simply allowing your kids to play in the dirt more often to naturally boost their immune system.
It's a balance you have to hold, nothing more nothing less. We have to get better at seeing through bullshit in order to know where the truth is most likely to be found, even when mixed with propaganda. Understand motivations - that means being willing to look for clues that do not confirm your views.

It basically comes down to: Would you rather suffer and possibly die because your appendix ruptured inside your stomach or would you instead accept the .2% risk (I'm making up numbers because I'm lazy) of dying from general anesthesia to get the surgery?

I love how in the end, she claims our glasses are now no longer foggy, when you can take her argument ad absurdum with that logic. What if her questioning of the questioners of the questioning of authority is also astroturfing, but without the inflammatory language? Wouldn't that be the ultimate conspiracy? And then we just keep going into outer space with this until nobody believes anything anymore and we go back into the stoneage.

#1 The concept of going to school to learn about the world is now completely covered by what the internet can deliver - that is if you know how to use it efficiently and not end up on a porn site every 20 minutes.
Before, we needed schools and other physical spaces to gather, share and process information and get value out of it. Today, you can get everything ever taught in schools for centuries across multiple continents with just a few mouse clicks and save it to a tiny thumb drive that has 100 to 1000 times more storage than an entire government office with desktop computers 20 years ago. Access to information has evolved almost as much as the computing power and storage that carry it. Going to (old-)school is really only needed for social development nowadays - although even that could be argued with, since social systems on the internet are exploding, creating new forms of social interactions across physical borders, for better or for worse.
Thinking back, the only thing I really learned from going to school in the late 90s to early 2000s was how to deal with frustration, incompetence and massive lack of interest. And I realize now how much that fueled my obsession to learn and understand new things independently the moment I dropped out and was able to pursue everything I wanted, surfing this magical and exciting, new place called the world wide web.

Nothing kills interest and creativity like being forced to have it. And nothing kills engagement and productivity like a bell going off in the middle of an interesting experiment, which took a little longer to set up than expected, telling everyone to leave now and come back next week.

+1 16. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Dramatic footage of the moment a passenger jet hits a bridge before crashing into a river in Taiwan

#2 I believe the left engine failed completely, which is very bad news on a propeller plane that just left the ground. Saw it zoomed in somewhere, it was barely rotating at all compared to the right engine. Shortly after take-off the pilot called "Mayday, mayday - we have an engine flame out!" to the radio control tower.
The last second turn/pull/swerve is intended to create drag in order to break the fall as well as to avoid taking out the bridge with the whole body of the plane, thus increasing chances of survival significantly. This is every pilots worst nightmare and he did an excellent job to the very last second, limiting the damage caused by the crash and probably saving quite a few lives.

#(removed comment) What the fuck? Are you high or something? Have you ever seen a plane that close right after the start? You always feel like it is about to shave the top of your head, even when it's still a hundred meters away, simply because you have no point of reference. How is the cab driver supposed to expect that plane to crash right into him? He doesn't have air control radio. Even without that last second move, it is near impossible to see that coming. Ever notice how hard it is sometimes to see one of those high traffic lights when you are standing at the front of an intersection? Or see a deer about to cross the road out of nowhere? Now try spotting a plane falling down from the sky next to you. I would have loved to see you steering that cab.

#4 You only really need launch control with gasoline engines, because the way the clutch is engaged decides how good of a launch you get. Electric motors stand completely still at launch and deliver instant torque from 0 rpm all the way up. Based on the tire specifications, the computer pretty much knows how much traction there is in dry conditions and uses that to calculate the maximum torque/power output before getting wheel spin.

0 23. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Dashcam footage of Mariupol being shelled on 24th January 2015

#4 My mistake, thank you. My point still stands though. I just assumed this was a Ukrainian military attack since the person in the car seemed to be speaking Russian and these videos are then often used as propaganda by the separatists to recruit more people against the "genocidal Ukraine", who sadly has no other option but to attack the separatists where they intentionally hide - in civilian areas. I did not check on this specific example though, so that's on me.
Russia essentially projects what it has done historically (as the USSR of course) and would happily do again, on the Ukrainians in order to justify extending its power grab into Ukrainian borders. It is terrifyingly similar to what Hitler did... pretending to save ethnic Germans from genocide by invading another country. Classic excuse for aggression by (borderline) tyrannical, authoritarian regimes.
Picture of schlafanzyk35 achievements

+15 24. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Dashcam footage of Mariupol being shelled on 24th January 2015

Before the "You kill civilians! Bad Ukraine!" idiots show up:
What does everyone expect the Ukrainian military to do when Russia is sending in unmarked tank brigades and other heavy weapons to support an extremist minority that wants to start trouble and rejects an elected representative government? Just surrender hundreds of kilometers of their border with Russia to Adolf Putin and his blind followers, because they hide in civilian areas to get more support when civilians are harmed in inevitable government responses? People make the same retarded argument against Israel, who really has no choice anymore but to attack civilian areas in Palestine to defend itself against a more and more extreme Hamas, because the civilian population supports this extremist fraction to a large degree and this is the only thing you can do to protect your citizens, faced with an enemy that ignores the rules of war and does not want peaceful coexistence either, but will only accept total destruction of the one democratic, progressive, diverse society in the region.
People think they are heroes for being so outraged about civilian casualties, as if everyone else loves to see innocent children die. Fuck all of you for implying that sick idea. What is the alternative? Just let all the evil maniacs rule entire continents again, like most of human history? Or do we make the painful sacrifice for the chance to live in a better world after the war. It is so much harder for a moral person to make these kinds of calls and live with them, knowing a lot of people will die or hate you, than not making them and folding to every historic act of aggression, which would quickly lead to the next Soviet Union or 3rd Reich.
Not choosing a small defensive war is all it takes for a much bigger one to brew and follow.

+15 31. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Cops vs A Hill

Well, it is a little funny exactly because it is so unlike in the movies (although real good movies do show non-superhuman moments like these) and because the first guy of all of them is struggling the most while the others behind him are like "Dude, time to roll... no time for backup!"

If tragic events like these are the end of situational comedy, the terrorists have officially won. Suffering creates a desire for humor. It's the most human thing about us. And it might be the most powerful tool we have along with music when confronted with discrimination, persecution and misery. Don't take my word for it, just ask the Jews. Why else would so many of the great comedians, musicians, filmmakers and artists be Jewish while they are such a relatively small group on a global scale. And don't give me that anti-Semitic propaganda like "Well they have all the money, so..."
It's a historically driven desire to deal with the most unbearable of all pasts, allowing the healing process to take place by humoring (or otherwise entertaining) one another. Even my own sense of humor took off to a whole new level since I had suicidal thoughts during a bad depression episode years ago. Nothing compares to it in my life so far and I would not trade that experience for a different one looking back now.

I don't think it is tasteless to see something funny in almost everything. We make jokes about being in prison all the time. Nothing funny about that either, in theory. Making fun of things we fear is a natural survival instinct, otherwise we would all be hurting or killing ourselves or others in a paranoid/panic attack every other day - which is essentially what humorless Islamists or other extremists do, because their religion/ideology/whatever does not allow for any form of joking around.

Alright, that was enough blow-hardy comment for me today.

So is that like a double negative mind trick on that issue? Or is it Hollywood actors all wanting to be number one by removing actress from their vocabulary?
Either way, I'm for using the female variations of words with the intent of specifying to avoid confusion. That's why we came up with most of them. We use man and woman instead of just human, don't we? Only the ones that do not make sense whatsoever and were just created out of political correctness are annoying to me.

+1 33. schlafanzyk commented 9 years ago on video Ready to get mind bended by these spinning sculptures?

#2 #4 #5 #7 All of you are wrong even though you get at the right principle.
This doesn't work live without a special setup. Not only is the human eye easily able to differentiate up to some 80-120+ frames per second and then some - I know I am, you just have to know how (24/25 frames is just what we decided to be the minimum and what makes movies look like movies for various technical reasons). But no frequency can ever truly replace constant information like a real life scene provides us with. It's always a percentage, which leads to the creation of this effect in the first place. It's the same with spinning car wheels or the droplets in front of a speaker experiment. It's just a blur in real life unless you introduce artificial AC lighting, a shutter, or something else that can provide a frequency to work with. If you could blink fast and steady enough, that would work as well. Apart from that effect, the human eye and brain work in a more analogue way, processing a constant stream of a changing image (like a DC power supply) not single picture sequences (sort of like AC power out of your wall sockets). Only when moving/blinking your eyes or being in a threatening/stressful situations, you can momentarily notice somewhat of a still image of reality. What we consider smooth motion in film just has to be enough for our brains to accept and interpolate the missing information in between each frame. Our eyes themselves work like a film or sensor that captures whatever information is available over time, continuous or not. If the information is infinitely accurate, there is no room for this effect to show, because the frequency is essentially only limited by the speed of light.
At some point though our brains just cannot process the change in time anymore to recognize it, but that's way past what we consider motion picture. The more aware you are, the higher that threshold where stuttering becomes fluent motion. This however starts out as fluent.

Happened to me as a kid at a sleepover after taking a huge morning dump and getting up quickly to get breakfast with everyone else. Collapsed like a domino tower in mid-walk, slamming my head hard on the tile/concrete floor. Got a nice scar on my chin and a few chipped corners of my teeth. Fortunately my jaw held up and head trauma was only minor - those can really fuck your shit up later in life (dementia, alzheimer's, parkinson's etc.)

My advice for when you start feeling light-headed: Stop and squat, sit or get down on your arms and legs - anything but standing freely. Another way is to contract your stomach or anus (yes, you read correctly), but be careful as you sometimes get even more light-headed after then letting go again.

Listening to music on a CD does not make it any less music, just because the delivery method is digital. Sure, it feels a little warmer with some analogue noise, but if the resolution is fine enough, our senses do not care about the theoretical difference. A speaker is still physically moving air and a digital picture still sends photons/lightwaves to your eye.

#8 It's actually a symptom of racism, not political correctness. Because they assume everyone will already think they are black, while somehow being white would make it more special. The white majority only commits less crime in proportion, because they have not been kept in a vicious circle of poverty for centuries. It is all about economic equality and opportunity. There should have been serious reparations to even the playing field decades ago. Now we see the results of continuing profitable injustice year after year and it will likely get worse. Affirmative Action will not be enough, and even that might be history.
But reading your statement, I'm pretty sure you know all that and would just prefer not sounding like a racists while implying racist conclusions.

#9 But if the ramp/suspension setup was the problem, he would not be perfectly horizontal at the zenith point (the theoretical optimum case), right? And all of a sudden go way off towards the landing. You can clearly see the nose tipping over much faster at the exact moment of the revs dropping. May be that's coincidence and the aerodynamics also reaching a tipping point or something else also had a bigger impact at that point, but to me it seems like he was in perfect shape, grinding away at the rev limiter up to the zenith point. That's usually when you get scared, not being able to see the ramp yet, because it feels like days have gone by already, and lift off prematurely to be able to see something.

#22 No shit again, genius. But that's only true for a certain engine setup. With a big turbo, the max power might even be past the rev-limiter, which is why hitting the limiter makes sense there in some cases. It is easier than trying to moderate the throttle in a situation like that (pretty much impossible anyway in 1st gear at high revs with a big turbo). That is a relatively common thing in overpowered sleeper cars - if you know a little bit about drag racing. Apparently that is too hard to understand for some people, even after a lengthy explanation.

+1 78. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video Longest Jump Story

My understanding is that this happens because he lifts off the throttle half way into clearing the distance. It has something to do with energy stored in the rotation of the wheels/gearbox/engine, which transfers into rotation of the car. It is in part the same effect that makes a helicopter crash immediately without a second rotor, although not quite the same. I forgot where I learned about that, may be someone else knows a little more.
You can see it starting to happen at the 80 meter test jump, where the car is already beginning to tip over towards the end as he lifts off. At the shorter tests, the air time is too short for this effect to show and he only lifts off at the landing. At the final jump, he is absolutely fine, hitting the rev limiter, until reaching the top of the curve, when you can hear the revs dropping off and the car goes totally out of shape immediately. It seems like he is not even clutching out for the jump, because you also see snow flying backwards on a few of the shorter jumps.
Put in simple terms: Even when in the middle of a jump, floor the throttle to raise/stabilize the front of the car, lift off/brake if you need to lower the front significantly - like Tanner Foust had to in his world record jump with Hot Wheels, where the ramp almost caused an opposite scenario.

+7 82. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video Surviving a 198 MPH Car Crash

#5 I hate when people don't even make an effort to comprehend a fairly simple explanation to a complicated problem. Late "desperation" lock-ups are characteristic for cases of brake failure. The lock-up happens at the very end before totally losing control, when he is already way off the racing line, and most importantly, way past the normal braking point, trying to do damage control, knowing his brakes are basically gone - unless he floors them. Even you should be able to see that part. He simply would not be going that direction and then proceed to lock up the brakes, if it was a simple driver error. "No brakes" is just a figure of speech for limited or no brake function, the degree of which often depends on a variety of factors - not just a simple broken wire/line. The ability to moderate brake friction to get effective deceleration is usually the first one to go - which is not the drivers fault, it's physics. Come back when you understand how brake failure and overheating works in racing conditions, before basically calling this guy a liar. You may also want to do some research on the different types of friction while you're at it.
Picture of schlafanzyk35 achievements

+18 83. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video Surviving a 198 MPH Car Crash

You are both wrong. What happens with brake failure is that the initial brake force does not come on as you would expect it to and need it to, in order to make the corner at all. The split-second moment when you think "Shit, no brakes" is when you have to take a chance and overcompensate for the failure, meaning you often immediately lock up the brakes once you step on the pedal as hard as you can, hoping to get the brakes to do anything. You simply cannot diagnose the reason for brake failure within half a second and have to take a gamble. That's why he is already on a weird line, aiming for the car in front of him instead of staying on the racing line. It happened to Louis Hamilton at Montreal this year. Luckily his brake failure occurred at the slowest corner with a big run-off area and did not cause a crash. It is not driver error. It is mechanical/material failure, which causes something that usually looks like driver error under normal circumstances, because of its very nature.

Loving all the 'no shit' comments here.

He is obviously running a high-rpm turbo with a big power spike right before the revlimiter and doesn't want boost to drop into a hole by shifting early. That's harder than you might think, because your speedometer will show the speed of the wheels spinning at the limiter (unless you have a GPS tracker) and not the actual speed of the car, which you then have to guess. That means you have to make a quick call how long to hit the limiter, before you start loosing acceleration. The perfect shift isn't always right before the red line or limiter, because it depends on the amount of traction you get at launch and over the course of the run. 2nd to 3rd he apparently didn't need to hit the limiter as it seemed like he lost a little bit of time there.

In 1957, $2.200 was the equivalent of about $18.000 today, adjusted for inflation. It is easily worth 20.000+ now. Can you imagine like a Chevrolet Cruze being worth a whopping 150 grand in about 50 years? Makes you appreciate why only a few were kept in good condition. Curious to know if there is something like that available for sale now. I doubt any mainstream production car since the 1980s will even keep up with inflation for at least 100 years. May be something like the Tesla Model S or an original Toyota Prius would be a logical choice? Electric drive and electronic range management could be what power steering and power brakes were back then.

#8 The definition of an ad film campaign is that the commercial copyright holder is also the author of the product that is (one of) the subject(s) of the film.
The copyright holder is Microsoft. The subject is a core recognition factor of one of their Windows operating systems (the product).

Is a Chevrolet brand commercial not considered a commercial if it only shows the history of cars they no longer produce or supply spare parts for? My guess is you would not enforce the same standard there. What you think an ad should do in your book has nothing to do with the technical definition. The creator of a film cannot have a conflict of interest with the actual content of the documentation for it to be a legitimate documentary rather than a documentary-style ad campaign.

It is not at all comparable to Red Bull videos, which are just sponsored by the company - not actually about demonstrating their product. They would not be considered documentaries, but also not ads. Once people get a Red Bull in their hand and start drinking it with great pleasure, it becomes an obvious ad. But people are not riding Red Bull cans down a steep hill and landing in a pool of the actual beverage content.

The category takes nothing away from the quality of the piece - that's not the point. I like the video regardless of the category - because it is well done and interesting. It just is what it is: A good advert that tells the story behind the image we all see in our head when remembering one of their most historic products.

#5 Same here in Germany.

I actually had a case almost exactly like the one demonstrated in this video happen right in front of me one night in downtown San Diego last year.
A guy was clearly having a rough night with too much of .. something. He went down to the ground, was just lying there, drooling, barely breathing, looking into the sky, no eye movement. Me being from Germany, where in driving school they teach you, not responding to a medical emergency or accident is punishable by law unless you have an exonerating reason (I guess my excuse could have been that it was my first night out in a foreign city I barely knew, with friends of friends I met only a few days ago), it wasn't even a question in my mind to do something. So I pulled out my phone and was about to dial 911, when someone stopped me, pointing at someone else on the corner already on the phone with 911 and said he got word back that an ambulance is already on its way. Half a minute later, I heard the sirens approaching and was relieved that I didn't have to deal with all the questioning and stuff that could have come along with events like this if things went south at some point.

The one thing that stuck with me - apart from the chilling image of that guy's blank face - was that every single one of the three emergency response units arrived - police, ambulance, and a firetruck. I guess it's a precaution to be prepared for everything if people are not judging a dangerous situation correctly. Seemed overly dramatic, but actually makes a lot of sense - what if the guy was some place hard to reach.
Anyways, the lesson is: A wasted emergency call on someone, who's faking every once in a while, is a perfectly fine price to pay to avoid finding out later, that someone died because your inaction hesitated to do the right thing.

+9 101. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video Appearances Experiment

#3 Almost exactly my thoughts. These things are much more nuanced than examples like this make it seem like. Also, the acting seemed pretty bad if you asked me. You don't expect bad acting and a fake stroke/attack from a guy in a suit, so you are more likely to overlook the bad acting job. You do expect it from someone, who could very well be a broke drug addict looking for a fix. Rich addicts don't have to beg for money, they got that covered and overdose in private - which actually makes them more likely to die unnoticed (many examples from Hollywood come to mind).

It's simple math:

People are hesitant to help someone who looks like a drug addict or homeless person for the same reasons they would not stop to help someone in a dark Porsche Cayenne with tinted windows and a custom license plate, parked in a sketchy neighborhood or in front of a mansion in a cocaine growing region. It has nothing to do with how wealthy someone looks or lack of empathy, but a rational judgment call weighing your own safety against the safety of someone you don't know. It is the public road version of "making sure your own oxygen mask is on and working properly before worrying about other people's masks". But on the other hand, there are also many different, safe, indirect ways you can help. This definitely says something about what we expect from society, or about our trust in societal responses - or rather lack thereof. I do feel like paying that much in taxes, while the people in obvious need get so little in return (basically a small IV line to keep you alive - not actual help), has a lot to do with it. We do feel obligated to help, but we should know - not worry in the back of our heads - that if it blows up in our face, other people will jump to our defense just as quickly.

#12 Exactly - although I feel like Don Rickles was the one who came up with that. I guess great minds think alike. Quotes like that would likely be considered hate speech over here.

The kind of humor in this video however, is basically the light/animal version of the southern U.S. racists laughing at blacks being lynched and killed for entertainment. It is actually a little disturbing to see such low-level comedy genuinely making people laugh... like watching a child torturing small animals with creativity and getting a kick out of it. Russians have a similar thing going on with all sorts of minorities - mostly gays though. Just dehumanize them and watch basic societal empathy disappear.
That's why all those super fucked up news storied are always out of Germany or Florida - or nowadays Russian dash-cam videos.

Considering how ethnically homogenous most communities are over here, Europe is actually more racist in context and less socially progressive than most communities in the U.S. when you just dig below the surface a little. Regional soccer is the best example - or even upper league - where black players are to this day sometimes greeted with bananas thrown onto the field.
The cultural diversity of the American population just leads to racism appearing more blatantly than the systemic, low-key racism in Europe, which can easily give rural areas in the South a run for their money.

That's why popular comedy is such a good indicator for the state of social issues and morality, because laughing at something is such a visceral response.

We had a good run of copying the real thing in the 90s. Thanks to the internet, we can all watch the originals now - Stewart, Colbert, Letterman, Fallon, Kimmel, Ferguson, Conan, Arsenio. Even Carson bits, old SNL and MADtv episodes can be found out there.. HALLELUJAH

#5 Cosmetics... doesn't change anything about my point. We are always just racing after, building and preparing for what we expect plus about 10-20%... or may be 50% if there is good regulation in place - and then something twice or three times the size of anything we've ever seen before happens.
How about building those things to withstand 200-300% before the MCA, so when shit goes down, we can be like "Geez, that was close - saved us billions in emergency management and environmental clean up costs, good call! We better keep stepping it up at the same rate for the next one like this."

The ancient technology we still use today is fundamentally flawed. It is like trying to cook with gun powder instead of natural gas. The source of energy is relatively rare, the reaction is highly energetic and dangerously uncontrollable, and the final output is laughable compared to the total release of energy.
What we need is low temperature, low pressure, passively fail-safe nuclear power, not the same old highly inefficient reactors with a feel-good safety refresh, leaving us with piles of nuclear waste that needs to be looked after for centuries.

You would probably have to completely start over from scratch (something like LFTR) and decentralize the energy market to an actual "free market" (appropriately regulated of course) - which would ruin the very lucrative crony energy/government deals, especially since the nuclear arms race ended as well. Meanwhile the current quasi-monopoly is still making energy giants more profitable every day, the longer they run and the less they maintain plants. And when things eventually go south, the taxpayer/environment will bleed instead of them.
You can't seriously think telling them to put their generators on stilts would solve all these problems of traditional nuclear power.

I have had my share of late teens/early 20s depression, and there is no reason people with autism cannot have it, and have symptoms show up in a more graphic way. If you think about it, how much more depressed and angry at the world and yourself would you be, if you had autism on top of everything else? It does not need much more than common sense sometimes, even if the subject is very special and the condition would seem to suggests more than that. Of course, it could be side effects of medication, a change in his condition, even things like the weather, whatever - but you should really consider the most obvious explanation first. At least that's what seems the most logical to me as a relatively neutral observer.

This is one of those monumentally gigantic disasters, that no matter how often you revisit it, you still cannot fully comprehend the sheer magnitude of all the forces in action causing this kind of - for lack of a better word - biblical destruction. It makes you understand how people believed in the wrath of the supernatural before science was established.
And all that is still before the imminent nuclear meltdown incident even comes into play, which adds a whole new level to the long-lasting devastation effects on the region.

We can handle mother nature/earth. We can handle man-made risks.
We cannot handle both at the same place and time.

Building nuclear power plants on geologically active land was about as smart as building skyscrapers on top of swamps would be.
I hope California is watching and stepping up preparation efforts. A big one is due to happen there in withing the next 10 years and with every year past its due, it will become more and more powerful than expected.

+5 134. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video TED talk on how TED talks are worthless

The evangelical pastor/megachurch comparison was spot on. Exactly what I picked up on when the whole Kony2012 thing was going on.
It seemed like a self-serving publicity stunt, designed to shift attention away from gigantic problems, which seem unsolvable and need real innovators and pioneers, and towards an emotional justice effort where we can all be the great savior by doing almost nothing at all. Now everybody can feel like Jesus/Liam Neeson simply by retweeting/reposting a campaign that was never going to change anything - nor did anyone really care about it working anyway. Meanwhile, political inaction caused a hundred times more death and destruction all over the world. Literally, just the other day, I was wondering whatever happened to Kony2012. I just remembered that the guy running the campaign went completely nuts and then there was silence.

Unfortunately, TED has become the atheist/scientist hipster version of "spreading the gospel". We don't need gospel though, we need political actions. Though I have to admit, I still love at least half of the TED talks. And to be fair, many of them are still truly inspiring and making a difference especially to entrepreneurs in poor countries.

But if I had to choose one speech to replace all TED talks, it would be Neil DeGrasse Tyson on space/science as culture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNxnCzz5oQE

+3 136. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video Fuck the poor

Clever. However, this is totally to be expected and the solution is not treating the symptom (begging harder for those in need) unless you also deal with the root of the problem. We pay a shit-load in taxes, so we feel like we are already done helping the poor. That makes some sense. But when our governments then waste the money on paying themselves and their corporate buddies and fucking over the poor, we cannot be bothered to address that, as long as most of us are still above the poverty line. So the powerful just have to make sure enough people are not desperately poor to keep the status quo intact and keep leeching off of our collective hard work, which is supposed to benefit those in need, not those already in excessive wealth.
This is the weirdly hypocritical society modern socialism does come with when combined with badly regulated capitalism, unfortunately. We put our elderly, disabled and otherwise troubled in dedicated facilities and pay for it so we don't have to deal with the emotional baggage or see the struggle. It makes it easy to avoid actually caring, while also not feeling like a totally apathetic asshole. It is barely one step better than community churches helping the poor, if at all - and that's coming from someone who is outspokenly not a fan of religion.
That also explains why the U.S. are constantly at the top of charity donation lists, because the social safety-net over there is such a disaster and hence the emotional desire to help is much healthier, so people are much more involved in actually fixing injustices - even though they are of course hopelessly outmatched in the face of hundreds of failed policies, endless corruption and growing income inequality.

You don't notice how often this happens unless you have a crosswalk right at your doorstep, like I did growing up at my parents house.

If you barely have the strength to raise your arms high enough to hold the steering wheel, you should not be operating a motor vehicle - end of discussion. You are basically operating something as dangerous as an automatic machine gun in terms of the ability to hurt or end human life. I absolutely disagree with the author's disagreement. It feels exactly like robot music - cold and super/sub-human. It is an impressive work of art and could theoretically be considered great music, but the tiny human imperfections and our motoric limits are what makes music great in an emotional way - for most people anyway, even in Jazz/Funk/Progressive. It's the same reason why computer-generated, perfectly symmetric faces don't look nearly as beautiful as real faces, which are just very close to the theoretical ideal. That individual emotional connection is the one thing pop-rock/pop-soul music gets right - even though most of it is complete commercial horse shit these days, because it's the worst of both worlds: Every song written by a group of a dozen people, then programmed, synthesized, auto-tuned/melodined to hide all imperfections, and trying very hard to be emotional at the same time. It doesn't work. Pop music today is the antithesis to what pop music once was. But robot music is not the answer. Neither is all the hipster pseudo-indie pop with incoherent lyrics and simplistic instrumentation.

This is how nationalism/regionalism and politics of the masses keeps us from making any progress on this issue... "Well, I want my own timezone and you can't stop me from doing it. I don't want to follow the rest of the world, so fuck everyone and enjoy the extra work."
Picture of schlafanzyk35 achievements

-4 189. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video The Problem with Time & Timezones

#3 Obviously things would have to change around our habits. You have to look at what was the point of deadlines being set to midnight originally: It's to ensure everything gets handed in on time, so the reviewing process can start the next day. All you have to do, is add an hour of the day to your deadline that makes sense. We already do this for special tasks, and it would further prevent people from missing them because they forgot about being in a different timezone. No change ever comes without adjustment. But I'm fine with that, because it will have huge advantages. The effort and energy that is wasted every day dealing with these timezone issues is far greater than the effort investment it would take ONCE to change to a new system for good. Everyone after us would grow up with it and be confused that people used to have different timezones and DST... like it was something left over from medieval times.

Timezones should not even exist, just like there are no seasonzones for the northern and southern hemisphere.

Australia doesn't have a July in January and January in July. No, you just know that the seasons are inverted and regionally correspond with where you are on the planet. Same should have happened with time. Forget just getting rid of Daylight Savings Time.. get rid of all timezones!

I also think we should set a new standard for what year it is. The year 2000 was right around when the internet exploded. That should be our new zero starting point. The death of Jesus should not have anything to do with our calenders anymore. We have science now.

#3 You have a lot of catching up to do on nuclear physics, radiation and radio-toxicity.

The radioactive decay products with a short half-life are the most dangerous ones in the short term, which make a bunker and food supply necessary - other than the blast itself. After their decay, all you really have to do is avoid long periods of exposure and direct contact with or intake of other radio-toxic decay products. That's enough to leave the bunker and escape the blast site and get to safer grounds. Old-school solid fuel fission reactors are a completely different beast. Compare Nagasaki and Hiroshima today to Chernobyl and Fukushima - you'll see the difference.

However, it is still most likely staged or at least a decoy setup. But either way, it is a good reminder to all of us, what war feels like to those who live it every day.

+2 233. schlafanzyk commented 10 years ago on video The wisdom of the crowd

#7 and you're missing the point of his comment. This is a flawed experiment. You cannot possibly scale up to compensate for infinity or randomness. That's why the masses are in fact not wise and just seem to be, and also why #2 wouldn't work at all - even if you asked enough people that chances are one of them would actually be right. You cannot average out complete ignorance, you need a minimum amount of knowledge in every participant.

#5 is right. The success of this is highly selective and still very random. It relies on mathematical/logical education and experience more than group size, which is just a moderating or refining factor. The task also has to be a very basic one, scaled up for effect. It is however much more likely to be right than any random individual guess. But in 99% of the cases, you would still be much better off asking an expert of that particular field (in this case probably a savant) than asking 99 random people and averaging them. Not only are you more likely to get a good answer that way, it is also MUCH more efficient.

Science and democracy would not exist today if a few people did not decide to resist and fight the wisdom/ignorance of the masses.
Remember that this also works for propaganda, myths and totally incorrect facts, as long as they resonate with either our individual experience, intuition or primal instincts.
That's why modern democracy was "invented" in America and had to spread back to Europe, Asia and Africa, and not the other way around. It is almost impossible for a few wise people with knowledge and a progressive idea to change an opposing system. It had to be a new place and it still took several, brutal wars to succeed. It's also why today, democracy works even better in places that got another "fresh start" after WW2 compared to the now old U.S. system, which has turned into a corporate-ruled democracy play.

Like pretty much everything else, this is a double-edged sword. And it has to in order to be even remotely scientific.

#2 That's because we're talking about the additive color system where red and green also produce yellow and not one mixed with the other.

In the subtractive (paint) system, you get pink by mixing red with a little bit of blue. Too much and you end up with violet. I guess you can compensate for that with a little yellow to brighten the final color.

In the additive (light) system, you can mix them equally and get a perfect pink.

-5 272. schlafanzyk commented 11 years ago on video No Place to Race

Good PSA concept, but there are a few flaws in it:

- No benches or other objects on freeways/highways/Autobahn (PSAs are aimed at stupid people and that's their way of thinking)
- No mention of the dangers of both fast and slow drivers on the same roads
- Racecar drivers crash all the time and walk away 99% of the time, hence people feel okay playing and underestimating the odds - bad idea
- Really only appeals to motorcyclist, who by their very nature (many of them) do not care about their lives half as much as about the thrill of riding a motorbike - otherwise they would have a car or a conventional bicycle

The most dangerous situations in every-day-traffic however, that are not caused by voluntary, irresponsible behavior (drunk driving, speeding, impatient/risky overtake, etc.) are caused by simple ignorance of basic traffic safety rules - for example, people standing in the middle of a multi-lane road discussing a tiny fender bender often without even setting up a hazard triangle instead of pulling over to the shoulder lanes... or not responding to changing road & visibility conditions appropriately... or driving old, unsafe/unserviced cars.. or failing to analyze potentially dangerous situations and properly expecting minor acts of negligence that can be responded to the right way very easily to avoid them turning into a bigger mess by overreacting.

Here in Germany, driving schools are required to put a lot of focus on these issues, which is the only way the Autobahn remains safe and does not turn into a death trap. In fact, this results in one of the safest overall traffic environments in the world, despite having no speed limit on parts of the Autobahn. This PSA is on the right track (education is key) but it still misses the goal in the end.

#6 The problem with industry tools like you is, that you pretend that these "safe" methods last forever and that continuing scientific studies don't matter, once something is deemed "safe" after intense lobbying efforts. The reality is, in the long term, the danger to the environment is much higher than any other energy source. Even nuclear power is more controllable, because plants can be maintained and improved through technological progress and the energy return rate is MUCH higher. I'm not a fan of nuclear energy, but considering climate change, it's the lesser of the evils. Fracking is even worse than coal. Nobody can fix the damage caused by hundreds if not thousands of deep underground chemical leaks. Some of the casings are failing already, even though they are supposed to last at least many decades. And even if they do, what happens then? At least stored nuclear waste can be relocated and reprocessed.
The fact that U.S. oil giants managed to even get their fangs on environmentally aware nations in Europe is not a pro argument. People here in Germany have been intentionally kept in the dark and there is no legal way to fight back, because almost everything is kept secret in terms of the health risks, ecological risks, etc. so there is no case to be made until the first disasters start unfolding and the chemicals start showing up in places they don't belong.

#7 Of course they all got in trouble towards the end of the war and had to recover slowly in a global market economy. That's what war does. It eventually drains resources, unless you are the winning party. The point is, at the time, pretty much all German car makers were part of the military industrial complex of the 3rd Reich, and in some cases even exploited slave labor, i.e. people who were bussed in from concentration camps, or eventually going there. I guess you would be surprised, how much evidence was destroyed after the war - I am not. It's the economic version of telling (yourself) pretty little lies, so you can't be held responsible (justly or unjustly) for obvious wrongdoing in the past. Companies do it, individuals do it. It is wishful thinking though, just like your VW Beetle production facts.

Since you already mentioned BMW as an example:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2042405/Family-dynasty-BMW-admits-using-50-000-slave-labourers-Nazi-era.html

"The dynasty behind the BMW luxury car marker has admitted, after decades of silence, using slave labour, taking over Jewish firms and doing business with the highest echelons of the Nazi party during World War Two."

I highly doubt they were the only ones. Why? Even in my family (very left leaning and anti-authoritarian), the records and stories of that time have holes and room for interpretation - despite being from Northern Germany, where people were much more liberal and more likely to oppose Hitler and the war. That doesn't mean nobody looked the other way when these things were happening in the background.
All I'm saying is, the line between guilty/complicit and innocent is often conveniently placed exactly where it needs to be in order to avoid dealing with history.

And now, let's return to watching cat videos, as the internet requires us to do.

+2 290. schlafanzyk commented 11 years ago on video Deception with Keith Barry

I think I've watched enough Penn & Teller to pretty much know how most of them work... except for that last one. That was impressive! There are so many ways to possibly reverse engineer the sequence of actions and the setup while it could also be based purely on chance and psychology - which would be my guess.

But something tells me there are more layers to it - for example: Remember how it had to be a male victim? Does anyone know if that's the key or at least a factor? Or may be part of a backup plan, or a way out in case the trick doesn't go the usual / most likely route? Or is that just a practical way of avoiding unnecessary hysteria?

If you do know, please don't reveal the complete solution yet. I wanna see a few more people approach it their way.

I wonder if speed wobbles would be audible at that kind of speed. Usually they are lower than the lowest frequency the human ear can detect as sound.

+5 338. schlafanzyk commented 11 years ago on video World's Roundest Object!

Exactly, a sphere is the easiest geometric shape to sustain and work with, because of the fact that it is self-stabilizing. Planets are good examples for that. Even though they are made of all kinds of different solids and fluids as well as gases, they are still very close to a perfect mathematical sphere. They are also easier to measure, because you can just spin a sphere and look for relative differences with a single laser reflection setup.

If you wanted to grind a perfect cube, you would have to get it down to a single atom edge, which is virtually impossible because of how fragile the material woud be at that point.

+1 341. schlafanzyk commented 11 years ago on video Guy rolls his car 7 times and walks away

People who say this was caused by braking don't know anything about traction, steering and motorized vehicle dynamics in general. You should not own a license and drive a car if you think this was brake related. Or at the very least you should not drive faster than 30 unless the streets are dry. Your car can kill people, so just like gun safety, you need to know how to handle it right.

Braking would have caused relatively harmless understeer, which is why the cars in front of him did not spin out despite braking (they probably had better tires as well). Almost all non-racing vehicles have stronger front brakes or an ESP/ESC system with a front brake bias and ABS in order to prevent this from happening everytime you brake in a corner.

This is a textbook example of lift-off oversteer, going too fast in the rain and hydroplaning. The idiot was lucky he walked away from it.

But then again, the whole thing might have been caused by engine failure in the first place and the pilot may have done nothing wrong.

#12 That would be called an optical illusion. Because the camera stays pointed at the truck, which is coming to a standstill, and the car keeps moving at the exact same slow speed, it looks like it is accelerating even when it isn't. Compare its speed relative to the background - it only changes a tiny bit because the angle of the camera increases relative to the test track (cars in the distance look slower). There is no physical contact either, because you would hear a very recognizable plastic-crunching noise.

#6 Actually doesn't have anything to do with lag, although that adds a little to it. Most of it is just a calculated delay in case something horribly graphic happens. The director/producer/host needs a few seconds to respond and tell the engineer to get off the live feed (Remember the famous "GET OFF GET OFF GETOFF IT GET OFF IT! GET OFF IT!!!!" video, where that exact worst case scenario happened and somebody screwed up)

#5 You can see the car driving towards the upper right corner of the screen in the end of the video when he pans back to the TV. It was driving towards the upper left corner before, so it matches the right-hand turn we see happen outside.

Would be a great commercial for Djihadists as well. These are the same kind of nutjobs who sacrifice their sons and daughters for any holy cause, which is often just some fantasy that some idiots made up hundreds of years ago. The people who don't give a shit today, most likely won't give a shit tomorrow and the junkies will most likely still be junkies later. That doesn't mean they don't deserve help, but it should set obvious priorities and there is something seriously wrong with you if you put strangers lives above the life of your own offspring. How could you even be happy for a second that someone else's life benefited from you actively killing your own son, who had no choice at all and was simply born to a father with a hero complex. How is this even up for discussion? I'm confused.
This would be a real dilemma the other way around: Lots of people under the bridge and his family on the train. Would you choose to kill innocent strangers to save your family, not by mere inaction, but by pulling a lever? That would be much more interesting, because I would bet many people would still choose their family, even if they had forever to think about it.

#8 You should look closer and think for a second.
This is an old and extremely light-weight Fiat Panda/Uno, probably around 700kg empty + 100kg driver/fuel, engine in the front, almost no weight in the back.
The front left wheel never actually leaves the ground (just one person there) and when visible, the front right wheel seems to be in contact with the road as well (despite being lifted by four men there). The entire car is slightly tilted to the front left (away from the camera) and as a result at least 50% of the weight was probably still on that front left wheel. And 400kg is definitely possible for a group of 8 men.

So the video itself seems to be real to me, but the event is most likely staged - meaning the person in the car is one of them.. or they got lucky that the person was too confused to step on the brake.

#3 You obviously misinterpreted what I meant by "on paper" which I didn't accidentally put in quotes. Same DNA means same blueprint, hence they are in many respects the same person, just like an artificial clone would be, only made of logically different molecules of the same kind in almost the exact same order (mutation can still plays a role). Do you get my point now? If not, tell me: Where is the difference between splitting a fertilized egg with the same DNA in two and splitting the brain in two (except for the fact that the two hemispheres don't have the exact same functions)? Exactly, there is none for this matter. We are as we think. If two parts of your DNA can think without a physical connection, you are no longer one person, but two persons with a consciousness each. That is essentially what twins are, except they both have a complete brain of the same kind and that explains why they are closer with each other than normal siblings. So, separating a working brain is basically the same thing as splitting the rain worm, only they don't have a consciousness. I hope I made my point more clear now.

#3 I think this is a good thing, because people are more aware of how much taxes they actually pay in everyday life. Sales tax is a tax that affects the poor the most since a great share of their income is spent on groceries and household goods rather than capital investment, so you are more likely to be aware of the taxes you pay, much like you are more aware of your income/payroll taxes due to the fact that you have to file your returns rather than have the government take it away automatically without you even noticing.

This is why so many internet/telephone consumer scams are based on subscriptions, because people are less likely to notice and do something about it. In the U.S. people would go nuts if they realized they are paying 19% sales tax. Here in Germany, there was a little bit of a discussion in the beginning when it increased from 16% to 19%, now everyone just goes along with it. Nobody ever says "wait a minute, that is a shitload of money and it is mostly coming from the lower and middle class". Nobody ever looks at the receipt.

Interesting questions and the behavior and feelings of identical twins do somewhat answer them. They both have a separate consciousness even though they are the same person "on paper" and whatever differences they show are the results of the environment they grew up in. The stories of identical twins separated at birth are always amazing to me and show how much of us is genetically defined and how little we can actually choose to change about ourselves.

I wish my parents had made me realize that earlier in life, so I would be able to embraced it more often instead of starting to think in these dimensions at the age of 8 or less.

What do we learn from this? You can't really blame the U.S. for depending so much on warfare as a driver of the economy as the shit the rest of the world (especially us Germans) had been doing wasn't exactly minding our own business either...

We have to realize: Law based on personal liberty and rights, justice and due process are fragile and historically young ideas. They can be destroyed by foreign power just as quickly as they can be taken away from powers within. Never give up freedom for security as you will end up losing both. This applies to the internet just as much as it applies to the rest of society. Give us freedom and you will get the best of us. Take it away and you will get the worst of us. Unfortunately, the best of us have not been very politically active over the last few decades. Fortunately, that seems to be changing many places around the world.

+1 417. schlafanzyk commented 12 years ago on video Jeff Hawkins on how brain science will change computing

Am I the only one who was expecting the false assumption to be free will?

May be that's already considered a given in brain science, but to me it seems much more important for a brain theory than the whole memory/prediction thing, which I always thought was totally obvious, since I learned very early, that what made us intelligent, is the prediction of events, rather than complex behavior itself, and I never thought that would be a groundbreaking idea. A key moment for that realization was when I was observing the behavior of my cat and I noticed his inability to sense "modern" danger, unless it directly stimulates one of the environmental senses (touch, noise, visuals). For example, one day when our heavy but very quiet front door was shutting, it caught one of his paws and he was screaming like hell, yet he still didn't care the next time you opened it for him, meaning you had to hold it open in order to avoid it catching him again. It would be like a baby reaching for the hotplate and getting burned over and over again.

So, our ability to learn and adjust behavior based on experience and expectation seems very clear to me. But the part where we have to recognize that from a scientific standpoint, there cannot be such a thing as free will, that is where we run into trouble socially as well as philosophically which then leads to us having to question our own scientific abilities in the first place, if there really is no such thing as free will.
May be I am completely off here, but to me, this is what seems to be the real problem for a brain theory.

#17 I appreciate this open discussion, but you should see the some of the second/third/junior league (or tier? not sure about that one) stuff going on here (I assume you're not living in Germany). You will understand why one can get the impression, that the people I described are in fact the majority even though they are probably not if you look at the bigger picture. Either way, it's more than enough for me to dislike the whole cultural event of football/soccer over here (especially annoying during the world cup) and the sport itself is not interesting enough to make up for it. It has not evolved at all, you see more and more pathetic dives resulting in undeserved penalties (which is essentially enabling cheating) while extremely bad game-making fouls can easily go unnoticed so that important moments/decisions can be ruined by unnecessary human error while video replays will just not be allowed. I don't know.. it's just lost on me.

#18 No doubt about that. But even they get old very quickly from an entertainment standpoint. I mean you can only shoot through a bunch of people into the same goal so many times. It's the actions leading up to it that are most rewarding and they are rarely that mindblowing/creative or at least the number of key moments compared to the lenght of a game is not very high.
There are some exceptions and funny moments but nowhere near enough.

-2 already ;)

#13 You might think so, but the fact of the matter is, that it just is nothing but soccer to me. When I hear/read football, I instantly think NFL. I call it Fußball in German though, because that's what it is over here. But when I speak/write in English, I don't think in German and then translate it. My mind has pretty much adopted the language because of my way of development. Most of my English speaking/understanding abilities are a just result of watching Letterman, Conan, Ferguson, Stewart, Colbert and other great US television shows as well as movies for years now. You could say I am an American, born and trapped in Germany. In the beginning (probably around 2004 / 11th grade) I barely understood a word even though I had been taught English in school since 5th grade, just to give an example of how horrible English (=British) class is over here.. or the school system in general.

So, long story short: I call it soccer because I didn't hear it being called football very often, except on Top Gear may be.

The retarded music in this just reminds me why I hate soccer and living in Europe, especially my homeland Germany.. I can't even enjoy the undoubtably great athletics going on here. Crazy hooligans, fat ugly husbands mindlessly cheering for their pointless favorite teams because they got nothing else in life to cheer for and a game that is incredibly boring to watch, for intelligent people at least (seriously, most of the time there is nothing interesting going on).
You really have to be either dumb or drunk to fully enjoy soccer and since I don't like to be either one of them very often, I'd much rather watch any NFL or NBA game or even Tennis, Baseball or Snooker instead. Anything really.. handball.. you name it.

Now let's see how many thumbs down I can manage to get for this from all my fellow European "you should call it footegg"-friends. Always makes me laugh.

+2 428. schlafanzyk commented 13 years ago on video The Trolley Problem

#14 That's actually a better point than you might have realized or intended it to be.
In one way or another, every person is responsible for their position in life, we have to be, how ever unfortunate it may be. We base our whole society and judicial system on that, so the act of interfering in either one of the examples has to be morally wrong, as long as harm to a previously uninvolved person is the imminent result of your action. It sucks, but it has to be that way.
Picture of schlafanzyk35 achievements

+1 429. schlafanzyk commented 13 years ago on video The Trolley Problem

Moral dilemmas always lose my interest when I hear the line "if all you really care about is.."
People can't just only care about one issue isolated from everything else, we always look at the entire picture, personal consequences and we have emotions.

If the position of the leaver is in fact random and the single worker does not believe he is completely safe from traffic because of its position, then every single worker on any track is completely equal and the first example is the right choice. If not, I would not do it in the first example either.
As soon as one of the persons involved has a different status of exposure, everything changes, so in the second one it is obviously the wrong choice to push the afraid bystanding man. So, it is not really a dilemma if you look at the big picture. It becomes obvious when you replace the fat guy example with pulling the same leaver to an unfinished track that ends in front of a house with an innocent person living in it. Would you do it there? No, because the workers accept a certain risk at their workplace and have to look out for themselves for some degree, while the person living in the house would essentially be manslaughtered as a result of your action. 4 lives would saved in the process, but that does not make it right.

Also, for all of that to be even relevant, you would have to know the absolute worth of each one of the persons, because what if the fat guy was a child molester and so on and so forth. It's just a pointless messing around with our mind. Good judgement can never be reduced to a perfect decision based on complete knowledge, that nobody has anyway.

If you want to be there a little faster or need to go a little further, get a bicycle. If you still need to go faster or much further, take the car or motorcycle. What else do we need? Are we really this lazy and out of shape, that we need something to drive EVERYWHERE by motor, even INTO another form of transportation (the elevator)..?
Sure, it is probably fun to drive like a quad or a segway (or whatever that thing was called), but it is certainly not this huge transportation breakthrough. And I'm sorry, not in a million years will it look cool. Never underestimate the power of music. The pen might be more powerful than the sword, but nothing is stronger than what gets us in touch with our true feelings.

We like to see things in black and white, because it makes life easier most of the time. But the truth is, in one way or another we all live in that huge grey area and we could fall off the wagon at any time. It is the ability to realize that and the ability to think about it, which saves us in our darkest moments.

I have the greatest respect for this man. It takes incredible strenght to be able to see a potential friend instead of an enemy, especially in his position. This is how you truly win against hatred: Get these people in touch with their human side and help them escape from their extremist beliefs instead of fueling them with unnecessary wars. The best way to win a war is not starting it and help people get what they need (food, water, medical aid, technology, purpose) instead of what the extremists want (conflict).

Always remember: Wars only work because we are afraid of the unknown and because we forget that every offender could be a victim himself, no matter how hard it is to imagine.

Well guess what, there is probably a reason why this stuff is contained in a stick and not in a bottle or spray can. Phosphor is very aggresive and toxic, especially when mixed with water. I don't want to see this guys hands a few days after.

Lucky guy, but these kind of documentaries/reports are so bad.

"With all the thrashing Jimmy was doing in the water, the shark most likely felt threatened."

Exactly.. when you're a shark with a damn hook stuck in your jaw, the one thing that you really care about is some idiot jerking around in the water above you.

Advertising at its best! Nobody would ever switch to another channel if five minutes of this is what you would be missing.

Listen up commercial producers all over the world: If it's not fun to watch, it's not a good commercial! Just take this as the perfect example of how to do it right.

+2 475. schlafanzyk commented 14 years ago on video Video Games and Moral Choices

I think this is going way too far with the whole morality issue. Games are for fun and creativity and usually just allow you to do things that you could not do in real life or that would have unwanted consequences or something like that. This idea that games should be more than that seems over the top to me, if you compare that to other problems we have.
Besides, I don't want to live in a society where people use videogames for moral education instead of teaching real first hand social interaction.

Behaving morally wrong in videogames is fun, simply because it is not what you would do in real life and that kind of variety is what makes games like GTA flourish. Nothing wrong with that except that so many people let their kids play these games before they have even developed full moral awareness.
Other than that, there is really no need to create this illusion of moral meaningfulness for every action inside a game. At the end of the day, it's still just a game and that's what it should be.

I'm surprised he is alive to do this. Those people usually die as soon as they get out of the shower one too many times.

Jumping off the ladder would have been harder without the car smashing it away. And what's up with posting 5 year old videos from Break/BigBoys?
