#17 - In the Netherlands, where millions of people ride bikes, they don't seem to feel helmets are necessary. I think mandatory bicycle helmets are going a little too far. It's the slippery slope to banning any sort of risky behaviour. Nobody wants to live in a world that is that boring.

Kind of a stupid point on the biker's side, though. Car drivers have to constantly negotiate their way around obstructions in the city as well. The guy is just militant and inflexible and thinks he's better than the other road users who actually have to obey the rules.

Farmers can't change the system, because they are at the mercy of the food processors. It's your choices that determine what the processors are willing to pay for.

1. Reintroduce and protect large predators such as wolves, large cats and coyotes into our rural and urban environment. It's your tough luck if they wander off with your child or girlfriend.
2. Eliminate several billion of us to give the animals their space back. Any of you want to volunteer?
Every hunter that I know actually eat the meat of the deer and moose they bag, for some, it is nearly their only source of meat in their diet.

My problem is not the "definition" of art, but the valuation of art. If this artist can make a comfortable living off this ONE idea she had (that takes little or no effort to produce), then so be it. But when someone's work becomes ridiculously over-priced, such as Pollock's or Newman's - I would personally prefer to see a little skill involved. It's not the artists or art that I object to, it is the community of hoity-toity art critics and speculators that drive the careers of artists for their own fame and fortune.

I don't smoke it anymore, but I used to, and I still have friends and family that do. Aside from the artificial social biases, it's no different than alcohol. Smoke a little or drink a little at home and get stoned or drunk once in a while at a party and you're pretty much a normal person. Get stoned or drunk all the time and you've crossed the line into addiction/alcoholism.
Anything is addictive - my family tends to be fat, do you think they're not addicted to food? Sure they are. It's the hardest addiction to beat because you have to face your drug of choice every day - you can never quit taking it.
How about those people who go out jogging daily, even in snowstorms? They are as addicted to aerobic exercise as any rummy is addicted to alcohol.

Battery swapping is not an option for several reasons...
1. all manufacturers would have to accept a standard battery pack, limiting design flexibility.
2. batteries are extremely heavy and dangerous to handle.
3. you may get someone else's piece of shit battery that they didn't take care of and holds very little charge.
You just have to work in a warehouse that uses electric forktrucks to see this.

What we need to do is reduce the use of vehicles, because it doesn't matter what they burn, they all use energy. Something that worries me is the mindset that wind and solar power is "free". The energy that we take from the sun or the wind was doing something before we intercepted it, and we don't know what removing that energy could do to our environment. On the present small scale that we harvest power from these sources, there is likely very little effect, but can we start to change our weather patterns by removing so much energy from the winds in California (for example) that it changes the weather in the midwest??? What about the ground beneath massive solar fields that no longer gets heated by the sun???
Who will investigate this? Likely no one, until it is too late, just like all the rest of our environmental problems

A lot of heavy truck and trailer suspensions are like that, both rear axles are solidly mounted on each end of an arm that is attached to the frame at a single point in the middle, like a teeter-totter. That way, as an axle passes over a speed bump, for example, the frame only rises half as much as the wheel.

In some states you can get your license earlier (15, 15.5) with driver's ed, but it's not required...
