Sure it's no big deal to look at it, think for a moment, and figure out how this trick is done. But that's not important.

#1 is right: speedometer says what could be 160kph but then drops to 120kph and *then* they overtake -- though admittedly by a lot more than 40kph difference in speed and I guess he saw them approaching in the rear-view mirror and simply gave up.
(Don't flame me for the actual numbers, I'm just guessing based on the angles of the speedometer arrow and mapping that onto my own speedometer. It would be more accurate but less to state arc degrees.)

#1 this isn't half bad, actually! Perfectly fine for shallow dives.
Obviously this isn't useful for deep diving because there just isn't enough air (volume and pressure) but even that can be solved with bigger tanks. Why not put those on your back, and why not place the air release button on a glove or even on the mouthpiece itself. Before you know it, you've reinvented scuba gear. How do you think it was invented in the first place?
The easier solution might be to simply keep that original snorkel and learn to use it right. And train your lungs - it's surprisingly easy! Forget about scuba; free-diving is even better.

#5 these are typically poems, but of a kind that don't seem to be poems to Western eyes. I have one like that which says "unlimited freedom like a big bird."
Similar to a haiku, these poems don't aim to tell a complete story. Rather, they are meant to inspire you to a certain feeling, or start you off on a certain tangent of thinking. It's the complete opposite of the Western 3D HD 4K CGI 4-hour movies.

The idea is that the rightmost emergency lane is no good for emergencies -- weird because it works fine in the rest of the entire world. Instead, they had a not-very-brilliant idea that all lanes should make way to the RIGHT except the leftmost lane which should make way to the LEFT.
Sounds like a simple rule but evidently this doesn't work very well because people get confused whether they should steer left or right -- see 0:44 and 1:49 for demonstrations. Lots of drivers (especially from other countries, naturally) don't even know about this rule, so they don't make room at all (1:30).
Yeah, let's not follow proven international standards but invent new ones...

"Gravity assist" sounds like magic, but it's really clever. Here's one source:
The idea behind a gravity assist is to use a planet's motion to accelerate a satellite. For example, a satellite heads toward Jupiter -- in the process, it accelerates because it is "falling toward" Jupiter. Then, it passes fairly close to the planet and starts speeding away from it. However, at that point, the satellite starts slowing down because gravity is pulling it back toward the planet. From that description, it would seem like the net effect of gravity assist is zero.
The thing that makes gravity assist work is the fact that the planet is in motion in its orbit. Jupiter is moving through space at about 30,000 mph (48,000 kph). If the satellite is moving in the same direction as Jupiter in its orbit, it can actually increase its speed by 30,000 mph! That is a huge speed increase, and it's completely free.
The problem with gravity assist is that you have to wait for the planets to line up correctly for it to work. That is why missions have to fly within certain time windows.

#1 "That stuff" can be quite effective. Each sheet is nailed down, as we see here, but that's just the first step. The real trick is that the sheets are tarred on the underside and after the roof is nailed, it's heated with a "flame thrower" of sorts. This actually GLUES the sheets to each other and to the roof. Depending on geography (mostly temperatures), this material has a life span of 20-40 years. Not bad, considering its low cost. (But it needs to be done properly...)

WTF?! I googled "ice needles" and found this:
The phenomenon occurs when the water is above freezing (obviously) but the surrounding air is below freezing. The liquid water is pushed out by its internal pressure and then instantly freezes. There are also some very cool images of "frost beard" http://goo.gl/z0P9Q and "frost flowers" http://goo.gl/wmsoK -- the ice is practically *extruded* into various shapes.
The boy in the t-shirt doesn't seem to be cold though, so it must be something else -- who can give the correct explanation?

#2 the road has either bumps or grooves in it. The car makes a rumbling noise when you go over them, and the rumbling also gives a different tone depending on the spacing of them. By putting a lot of them in a row, and at varying distances, you'd hear a melody when you drive over them.
Notice in the video that the melody stops when the car drifts too far right, and it begins again as soon as the car moves to the left.

This is one of many traditional "hanabi matsuri" (firework festivals) where cities and especially city precincts compete against each other on the biggest and most beautiful shows. There's a lot more than just the fireworks going on, and every event is absolutely stunning.
I've never been able to appreciate any firework shows outside of Japan since I went to several of these while living in Tokyo for 2 years. The most amazing part is that these shows last for one or two HOURS each, and with the spectacular shapes and patterns in the fireworks, it certainly puts all other fireworks to shame. 169. torbengb commented 11 years ago on video Collision between two cargos in Singapore detroit
Yep, big ships can't just stop. They take forever to reach their cruising speed, and take just as long to stop again. There's no emergency brake on a ship -- except having another ship perpendicular across the bow!
To make things worse, ships steer with the rudder and their stern. That means the leading ship can't steer away because it would push his stern into the other ship (and they're already touching!) and the larger ship can't steer his bow away because he has no rudder in the bow. He *might* be able to maneuver a little with the bow propeller, but that would be utterly futile at the present speed.
Really, the radar systems of both ships should have alerted the helmsmen of the collision course; it would have taken an insignificant course correction of the leading (smaller) ship to avoid the situation. We can't know why that didn't happen.

More googling: This phenomenon is quite rare, and I haven't found any *scientifi* explanations yet, but here are a few highlights from currents news media:
"Temperatures in the high 70s mixed with strong winds were pushing an ice sheet covering the lake against the shore, creating the effect" (http://goo.gl/GRmUZ) and "the remaining ice is very brittle due to the sun and warm temps, and at some point it reaches the state where ice first crystalizes. The ice then splinters, creating a racket in the process. One viewer emailed Mr. Sebesta claiming that it is known as "chandeleiring ice." Another friend of Jerrid's claims that a similar occurrence happened on the shores of Lake Mille Lacs back in 1994." (http://goo.gl/7ynHy)

Average adults have no way of discerning between the two situations. It sucks, but that's the way it is. That's also why it's so difficult to evaluate childrens' statements as witnesses.

Let's start with those flanks moving forward at 0:20 and 0:28 ... they go behind the front line -- why not go around the front and start boxing them in? Perhaps they are pretending (it's a training after all) that the line of protesters is much wider?
At 0:50, all of a sudden everybody wants some personal space -- doesn't seem very likely that things will work that way in reality. The fronts are suddenly filled with holes, so either side count dive into the opposition. But they don't. They just ... stand there and kick at the riot shields; or they just stand there and let their shields get kicked. Weak sauce.
1:17 Why the change in formation? I don't see any trigger in the crowd to cause this.

#4 short answer: it would instantly melt the mirror.
Long answer: It would melt the mirror because a mirror consists of a reflecting metal layer that *behind a sheet of glass*.... so the light beam would pass through the glass (heating it up), hopefully be reflected by the metal layer, then pass back through the glass once more. Clearly, the glass would absorb some of that energy and as it does so, the metal layer will become less reflective. These two effects quickly reinforce each other, so the melting would start practically right away.
The mirror will melt faster than the metal bolt we saw - because the metal bolt has more matter into which the heat can be absorbed.
Good thing that guy didn't put his hand in the beam... glad he was only kidding.
#15 we do have that. Modern homes are often equipped with solar-powered water heating systems. I get free hot water every day the sun shines! (I still need to pay for the water though )

Meh, this seems forced - trying to fit the idea onto the real world by any means possible.
For instance, at 2:34 they show the spiral but fail to mention that it touches the three pyramids in three very different places. With that method, you could probably make lots of different shapes fit. It would be more convincing if the spiral touches the tip or center of every pyramid, for example - but it does not. It's a stretch, and it makes the whole presentation unconvincing.
Again at 3:17, superimposing a grid onto a video, but it only works from that particular angle, and the points of the grid seem more or less arbitrarily chosen - just to be able to say it fits the matrix, but without further explanation or proof. 5:10 and 5:43 are equally random, just roughly mapping onto an image. 6:58 is most ridiculous, applying it to a computer-generated illustration.
But it's true about the sunflowers and pine cones though, so there's that, which is nice.

2) The trains are tremendously long, so turning them around would require lots of space. It really is easier to have them reverse direction.

#2 I don't believe that the next world war inevitably means similarly huge losses. Back then, the majority of the war was pretty much face to face and that meant a lot of direct casualties. Future warfare is augmented by high-tech to such an extent that one only really needs to take out the central core to make the rest of the machinery ineffective. Either that, or (close to) total annihilation - and in both cases, the military folks probably have better chances of survival than civilians.

#2 you're right. On the way up, it needs to lift the rocket, the payload, the fuel for the trip up, AND the fuel for the trip down. That's a lot more than "just" carrying the remaining fuel for the trip down. I can't give you specific numbers on this though.
Interestingly, this kind of landing is called a "suicide burn" because unless you nail the landing, boom. Going too fast, you can't brake hard enough before going boom. Going too slow, you'll fall the rest of the way, also going boom. Running out of fuel, you'll also fall, also going boom. The precision of landing a rocket this way is mind-boggling.

#3 this is a *racing* boat; if you'd go down below you'd notice that it's literally *empty* - these things aren't even painted on the inside, and there are no bunks, no tables, nothing at all. There is absolutely zero chance anybody aboard would be asleep. Also, because this is a racing boat, it is operating on the absolute limits of technology -- in this case, even beyond -- which is why it simply breaks apart like it does.
Regular yachts, on the contrary, would not suffer a catastrophic failure like this. They would not sink in 2½ minutes. Even if a part of the crew would be comfortably asleep in their cabins, there'd be time enough to wake everybody and evacuate. Unless they'd be run over by a container ship, or something ridiculously unreasonable like that. Disappearing ships can happen, but they are slow-sinking vessels that are out of radio range from anything else.
TL;DR: This is *not* how it happens.
#4 many boat races take days or even weeks to complete. There's often a round-robin schedule of sleeping and working. But this is America's Cup, the races don't take that long so obviously nobody would be sleeping.
#6 those navy hoops are really cool, but they only work because the pickup is going fast in reasonably calm seas for one thing, and even more importantly the swimmers are trained for that, wearing floatation devices, and aren't scattered around in danger of being run over. Navy pickup is *planned and trained* while this was ... not planned and clearly not trained either.

#4 The nuclear disaster was not caused by the earthquake (the plant withstood the quake) but by the tsunami. It's a small but important difference. The tsumani was several meters higher than anything they'd ever have anticipated -- and Japan is no stranger to tsunamis!
The root problem was that the emergency power generators (diesel engines) were in a basement room, so when the tsunami flooded it, emergency power failed. Had the generators been higher up, the generators would have kept the plant running through its controlled emergency shutdown procedure.
But nobody has ever built a power plant with elevated emergency generators. They probably would in the future; if any new plants would ever be built, of course.

If it's any consolation, both vessels are so huge that everything happens in slo-mo. That means all crew had ample time to get to safety, and nobody got shook up. It was probably just rather loud... the sound of money being wasted.

#4 Some are fixed to the seabed, but that requires fairly shallow water. Others are floating, and anchored using, well, anchors and chains.
Looking at these waves, it's quite clear that the water is deep. Otherwise waves of that size would have breakers and *those* would most definitely destroy this rig. I'm also questioning the integrity of this one even with "just" those long waves; there is a LOT of tension going on in that substructure.

I love how the dynamic of the music is not just from the notes but also the loudness (piano/forte) - without that it would be much blander. (example at 0:36)
There are reasons why most (but not all!!) pop music is junk in comparison to classical. This is definitely a prime example.
Seeing the music presented like this reminds me of Frogger or something - trying to dodge through oncoming aggressive traffic. I'm sure Disney's Fantasia could make something of that.

There's a frame with the green circle just above the horizontal, and the next frame shows the green circle just BELOW the horizontal. There is a frame missing in between, which would have contained the green circle exactly level with the red dot, and in this frame the green circle would have contained the white flash. And in the repetition at 4:19, this exact frame is present!
TLDR: #4 does not need to visit a doc.

Interesting that the first part to fail is not the hub, nor the blades' mounting point on the hub. The first part to fail is the very tip of one of the blades! Wind speed and centrifugal forces are highest there...
1. Wing tip fails.
2. Entire wing breaks apart and no longer provides a counterbalance.
3. The hub moves toward the other blades and _push_ them to destruction before they are ripped off of the hub.
4. In retaliation for this unprovoked attack, one of the blades hits the tower.
5. The dented tower has no structural integrity and bends over - just like a dented drinking straw.
6. The tower separates at a section assembly point, and only the lower section remains standing.

#2 you're wrong about "most", and #3 I know as a fact there are wooden houses south of Denmark too. (Jeg er dansker men bor i et nybygget hus af træ i Østrig.)
Lots of houses in European contries are made of wood! There's usually a layer of (non-reinforced) concrete underneath the flooring, but walls are often wood frame and insulation-filled paneling.
For instance, just Google the German word "Fertigteilhaus" (prefab house) and you'll see page after page of house construction companies that build using wooden frames: https://www.google.com/search?q=fertigteilhaus

Clearly the Japanese are a lot more civilized in their approach:
- First of all, they're experts at letting people LEAVE the train before they start entering it.
- Second, even the most crowded lines are run at good efficiency so there aren't 600 people waiting on the platform - that would definitely be futile, as this video proves.
- Third, they have those famous "people pushers" (although they're really only used on a single line, a single station, and only during peak rush hour): https://youtu.be/E7kor5nHtZQ

1:20 what's with all that fire? Must be in USA... When you know what demolitions normally look like, this is just ridiculous, as if a ten-year-old staged it.
It's impressive howsturdy some ofthe structures are, though. They go down on their knees but they refuse to fall - for a few short brave moments.

I had an Aussie exchange student in my class once. He kept saying how Aussie Football was the only real sport, and protection is for wusses. He went on to describe how much fun it was to run over the backs of fallen fellas - yes, the fun better because the shoes are *spiked.* In true Aussie spirit, he thought it just as fun when he was the one lying down and getting spiked in the back.
You're in play as long as you believe you can stand up. You're only *not* in play if they have to carry you from the field.
That's Aussies for you

709. torbengb commented 11 years ago on video Tank fires directly at a cameraman
My impression is not that the tank shoots at the camera. That doesn't look like muzzle fire to me. Also, tank ammo does not have fins! https://encrypted.google.com/#q=tank+ammo+images
Rather, the tank itself suffered a hit, and some part of its equipment flew toward the camera. It's a fluke that this part didn't tumble through the air, and that it just happens to look like a projectile with fins.
#6 mentions that the ballistic path is not consistent with a high-speed shot, but it would be expected if the object is impact debris flying off at relatively low speed.

This is bad parenting on so many levels.
This is not the way to deal with it. For starters, the parents should have intervened much earlier, before there were so many games. Why even allow a console in the first place? This isn't even about the games (all is good in moderation), it's about teaching your child values and that's where the parents evidently failed many years ago.
Driving a machine toward a kid is reckless. What if he had thrown himself forward onto the pile to protect it? That's what I'd have done. Granted, the kid wouldn't play more games if he lost both his hands but that's probably not what the dad had in mind.
Horrible.
