+29 36. orion commented 15 years ago on video Paperclips

#5: suprisingly, many people talk about about magnetic "energy", about "flowing". There's magnetic field, but no energy is lost and there's no "flow" unless there's something interfering with it. Technically, those paperclips are increasing resistance in electromagnets, but the effect is so small it's undetectable.

Also, people mix up mystical energies, EM field and EM waves. Static magnetic field is something totally different from cell phone waves and those are again much different from CRT monitor radiation, gamma rays, etc. With just a little education we could stop the conspiracy theories and panic about electrical appliances.

+22 51. orion commented 15 years ago on video Your printer is a brat

Absolutely true. And sad.
My old printer printed the page immediately when I clicked it. My new printer (supposedly some 20 pages per minute) is putting out lightshow display, breakdances for a minute with its cartridge, musically playing with himself and then finally starts printing the page after 2 minutes. And after it's done, it needs the same time to "recover". And the printers at work do the same thing. It also wouldn't turn off with on/off button and fools around for 2m55s every time the power comes back. I don't get it how newer technology needs all that crap when old printers just do what they're supposed to.

Sorry for the rant :(

#(removed comment) all mammals have the brain center for compassion, cooperation and social interactions (read up on brain evolution). A mammal can be your friend, or at least, acknowledges you as beneficial or harmless to his cause. Snakes for pets, on the other hand, is a misled and dangerous idea.

Additionally, most predators (especially cats) only hunt on instinct when they are hungry. This lion already knows this guy, and thus doesn't consider him a food source. And even a totally wild lion wouldn't harm you if he's full and if you aren't acting like an ass. Even more, predator instinct is reinforced by the prey running away. Turn toward your attacker, and you have a fair chance of making him go "wtf" and reconsider his decision.

+17 77. orion commented 15 years ago on video More 'bathtub' scenes

It's shot with tilt-shift lens which produces very narrow depth of field. This simulates optical behaviour of small objects close to the camera. You must also match playback speed so that behaviour of fluids matches those of "bathtub" circumstances. You can calculate this by matching Reynolds numbers of both flows. Before CGI this method was used to film marine battles with miniatures.

Highly misleading description. It's no more a sound than a picture. It's only converted to sound in some particular way (it's like listening to static with a radio in space). #2 I think USA is the only "western" country where they confuse religion with science. Everywhere else it's clear that religion teaches compassion, good behaviour, life lessons and coping strategies, explained by illustrative stories, conveniently packaged into the Bible (just like fairy tales teach children of dangers in the world). I grew up in a Christian household and I'm a scientist, and religion never forced its way into the natural sciences. It was just one of many different ways to suggest morals to a child and young adult. I'm very interested to know at what point in the history such radical degeneration of religion occured in some places in the world.

+13 106. orion commented 10 years ago on video Heating a room for 8 pence a day

#3 yes, if you are in primary school. There is no such thing as perfect combustion in practice, especially with solid fuel. It doesn't just go from C15H32 to CO2, the oxygen "eats away" the molecule gradually, and at any intermediate point, the intermediate molecule may evaporate, react with something else, form aromatic rings and so on... you get basically everything in between, and there are carcinogenic compounds in there (however, this is basically wusses crying about percentages, IRL you'll probably live just fine).

Not to mention the wax (paraffin based, oil-based or beeswax) is by no means a pure chemical compound. It would cost a lot more if it were.

At first I didn't believe this, but the math holds. A candle puts out maybe a bit more than 50W, and at constant burning, 4 candles are sort of like having another person breathing in there. If the room is well insulated (not in US obviously), it might just work.

+11 127. orion commented 10 years ago on video Guy connects 244 9v batteries in a row...

#2 you mixed up some quantities. Capacity (mAh) is the amount of charge. That has nothing to do with current you can get out of it, only how long it takes to empty it. Also, amp*hours (times, not division, that's crucial here). Notice mili (1/1000) times A (ampere) times h (hour): the more current you have, the less time you can use the battery, the product staying the same.

If you put batteries in a series, voltages add together, but the current only depends on the resistance: on how much load you put on it, and the internal resistance of the batteries. If you short-circuit it, the only thing that matters is the resistance of the battery itself, and if that's too low, the current is enough to overheat and destroy the battery. The resistance of the battery is quite difficult to guess, you have to measure it (by measuring the current, for instance)! You need U=R*I (voltage equals resistance times current: more resistance means less current and vice-versa).

+5 251. orion commented 10 years ago on video There is no pink light

Well it's semantically incorrect to say there is no pink light. It's just not monochromatic (single-wavelength). Actually, almost no light except for lasers (or LED if you are not very exact about your definition) is monochromatic, all light you know as light is broad spectrum (it doesn't mean it doesn't exist). Take for instance your LCD monitor - filtered white light by three different color pixels. No problem. Sloppy expressions can mislead people. And while we are at it, none of unsaturated (grayish) colors are spectral colors.

#(removed comment) how's that an offensive word? It's a perfectly good word, used both literally and figuratively. It's only considered improper because someone decided to start censoring it. It's like when you say to a child something is forbidden - it becomes interesting. +5 254. orion commented 10 years ago on video How attached are cats to their owners?

I never understood why people always bring this up when saying dogs are better. You just want an easy way out. Cats and dogs can't be compared directly, they are different. A dog is attached to you like a child - or a gullible and very forgiving companion. A cat is more like a roommate. You live together, but they are independent, you just coexist and try to benefit the most from the other. But that's not a bad thing either. It's actually more realistic - relationships are hard and you must constantly do stuff for people that don't appreciate it - parents of teenagers will agree with me here. But that doesn't mean you should say teenagers (or even hard to please partners) should be replaced with dogs.

Cats are a challenge. Dogs are an easy way out.

However, if you are insecure and need to feel loved and wanted, don't get a cat :)

This isn't really for making music, more like for generating random sound effects. There's no way you can create a proper tune or harmony with this, as a controller it cannot possibly be practical. At best, it's sort of like the theremine. There's a reason keyboard instruments were invented: they really are the best input controller for music. This one is like a touchscreen keyboard: a novelty item that's clumsy and error prone really doesn't compare to the real thing. It surely falls under the "gorilla arm" effect. If this worked, we'd all have the "minority report" interfaces to computers by now.

There's a reason why this never caught on (there were similar technologies for wireless routers out there for years). You need a line-of-sight. Or at least good white or reflective surfaces around. Every time your roommate passes by or you shift your head, the connection drops. It's basically no different than having an optic cable running from your lightbulb to your computer.

And you still have only one channel per LED, no matter how wide the spectrum is.

This idea is severely limited and in most cases it has no advantage over wired network.

Simply put: if pendulums are coupled (they act upon each other through something), the eigen-modes (modes of movement that are periodic in time and have well-defined frequency) require specific time-delays between them. #2 #3 it doesn't really need mortar. It's just there for extra binding (and probably at the edge), but the arch structure in general supports itself. It's stronger than most new-fangled flat roofs. In a flat plate, the stress of the roof's weight tries to break it - it's straining it perpendicular to the plate (wants a cave-in). In an arch, the stress is distributed to a force along the arch, so it's almost as if weighs nothing. The weight that compresses the structure also holds the bricks in place. Most structures built like this (with bare stone, no binder) are still standing after a millenium, whereas modern buildings don't last more than a few decades.

Actually, it was the best decision they could have made. You DEFINITELY don't want a single button to reboot or suspend the computer. You don't want to accidentally set it off. It's like some keyboards (mostly in schools) had some buttons next to the cursors that did shutdown/hibernate/suspend in a single stroke. They had to be taped over (after a few rage and desperation episodes). Sensitive and rarely used commands are better kept protected, like that flap over the Big Red Button.

I consider the worst decision the menu key next to the right ctrl. What a waste of space! It's a window/menu action that has nothing to do with typing. And it's very specific too: why don't other, more heavily used window actions, have their own keys? I'd much rather have another modifier and get more symbols out of my keyboard.

+3 362. orion commented 10 years ago on video This man found BOTH ends of the rainbow

Physics! The rainbow can only be where the rain is. This is rare because usually you are looking at the rainbow from outside the rain, where there is sunny (and the sun strikes the rain far out). If you are inside the rain but it's still sunny, the only limitation for the rainbow is the angle and in this case, the sun is very high up, so only the very top of the arc is above ground. The full-on half-arc rainbow occurs at sunset.

Well our system is objectively better. When you are looking for a house, you don't care when it was built, you just want to find it, and having them in order improves this task very much (not having to walk the entire block to find a house). Additionally, you must be able to name the roads so that you can give directions - there are roads without blocks around them, how do you tell where you are?

Keep b/w photos in black and white. Colorization is a cheap trick that does not represent reality anyway (if you are going to colorize it, you might as well paint it from scratch). An original black and white photo might at least look serene and authentic, while the colorized result looks fake (and is).

As for the restoration, there are a lot of advanced inpainting algorithms, cloning and patterning tools and so on, and the results are usually better than just smudging and manual painting. You can still go old-school AFTER the intelligent functions do their work. What this guy did removes more original information than necessary.

+2 419. orion commented 11 years ago on video How Evolution Works

#16 that also comes from evolution itself: the ones that didn't have the drive to survive, just didn't. Evolution is so basic, that it's spontaneous. Diversity is just plain old mistakes at copying, and natural selection comes simply from living in some (any) environment. There is no need for the organism to force evolution - it's just subject to it (although mechanisms to speed up evolution did evolve - because it was more successful to be that way).

This is also why algorithms that mimic evolution (genetic algorithms) are used in computing - they work even when the programmer has no clue how to solve the problem. He doesn't have to know, he just needs to throw out the bad solutions and repeat the process of randomization until satisfied.

+1 461. orion commented 13 years ago on video What Happens When You Drop a Slinky

Like #1 and #2 said, this is a misleading and childish explanation.

While the spring above the bottom is stretched, it is properly "hanging" on the higher parts of the slinky, its environment is exactly the same as before the top is released. The same holds if there is a tennis ball there. At the moment of release, the forces are unbalanced only for the topmost part. The disturbance then propagates downwards like waves.

If you observe the center of mass, it falls just like any other object. Only the shape of the object changes in a way that some parts remain stationary for a while. Kinda like a falling cat, only the cat's motion is much more complicated.

Sadly, in the US, most places practice a very wasteful way of serving food even if you don't actually take the food home. That would still be ok for NASA, but the next problem is there are no existing cables and connectors to plug it in, so it would still need to be a great bunch of video cards with individual connectors. -3 610. orion commented 10 years ago on video What would you do?

Whatever the content, it's still manipulative and exploitative to plant an actor and do a hidden or even obvious camera show. It puts people on the spot, thinking they are in a real situation, but in reality, they are provoked. It only teaches people that in the future, they should just stand back and not get involved in anything, because it may be a scam.

-4 617. orion commented 10 years ago on video Star Wars Symphonic Suite on a theatre pipe organ

The acoustics isn't very good. There are delays, the sound is blurred and slurred and can't keep up. A properly made pipe organ with mechanical or electronic relays (like this one) and correctly positioned ranks should sound much better - clearer and more accurate sound. Although it's possible that it's recorded outside the acoustic sweet spot - delays from different ranks because of physical distance from the pipes should be minimal where the majority of the audience is located. Either way, it's just lagging enough to make me constantly on edge!

This is the fakest thing possible. Forget the graphics, there is no RAM in the world that can hold trillions of data points, let alone index and draw them in real time. It's not about the algorithm efficiency, in's already impossible in pure numbers, even with decreasing the detail with distance.
Or possibly, the number is hugely exaggerated.

Great idea, poor execution. Sneaking up on people in a park is sort of staged, candid camera kind of stuff, feels fake. I'd much rather see this in action on a real road, possibly in a traffic jam.
